Extra-Point Bootinq Gives CoIoniaIs Edqe lover “. and |. Team Davis, Du Goff, Cavello, Shullenbarger. Not the -Four Horsemen, just some fair country football players. But with the chips down they came through with what was necessary and George Washington nosed out Washington and Lee, 21–19. before 1857 at Griffith Stadium last night. Andy Davis played on two bum knees and hardly could run. Fact Is, he ran with the ball only twice and once it wasn’t premeditated. His pass receivers all were covered, so Andy dashed Is yards for a touchdown in the second period. His passing was very good, how ever, as he completed 10 of 10 for 147 yards to account for ‘one touchdown and set up another. Because Of bum knees he practically was unusable on defense and played there only for the last minute and half. He intercept ed pass to end the Generals dying rally. AL Du Golf had to carry G. WIS running load. With Davis hardly running threat Du Golf toted IS per cent Of the time. He carried ~ times, bang. bang, bang at and through the Washington and Lee line for Ill yards and one touch down plus another dash of So yards for a I’D that didn’t count because of a penalty. Frank Cavello was in only to kick extra points. He has a dis located shoulder. Booted three perfect place kicks for the deciding points. Schullenbarger Punts Help. Johnny Shullenbarger did Moth ing except punt. But he made punting an offensive weapon. His 55-yard quick kick in the first period got the Colonials out of a hole and put the Generals in one. His 59-yarder that went outside on the Washington and Lee l in the games dying minutes put the Generals too far back to stage a late rally. And so it went in an interesting ball game as G. w. earned it’s second victory in five starts while w. and L. was taking its fourth straight defeat after an opening game win. Also worth mentioning ! is excellent blocking by Jim Feula. who cleared out tacklers ahead of Du Golf, and the defensive line play Of such as Fred Samuelson and Art Kojoyian. The Generals beat the Colonials in statistics but not by much. Actually George Washington looked to be the better team last night, but also not by much. Washington and Lee scored first from the opening kickoff, taking 5 minutes and 36 seconds to drive 50 yards with Ray Leister. an Arlington boy. dashing the final Is yards off tackle. Walt Michael’s placement was wide ‘and that sort of thing was to make a difference at the end. Du Golf Goes Across. | A Lester tumble recovered by Joe Kennedy on the Generals “A gave G. w. chance in the same period. Davis on a pass play saw Buddy Brown, w. and /. defender, fall down. and through that hole hit Charley Jones with a pass. Jones was run out on the 3 and two plays later Du Golf banged the final foot for a score. A Cavello conversion gave G. w. a 1-point edge. G. W. was pushed back from the w. and L. goal early in the (See G, W.. Page R-15D
