Margarita Declares Team Must Improve LOT 10 Beat B. T.. his Georgetown University foot ball team must improve 20 per cent before next weeks game at Boston College if it hopes to win That’s the big test midway through the Hoyas’ schedule and a game they truly crave to win. Margarita’s estimate Of what is needed before Boston College can be given a stiff game was made while reviewing Georgetown’s 21–6 triumph over New York University last night at Griffith Stadium. The Hoyas went into the game as three touchdown favorites. Help ing hold down the score was uncertain ground underfoot and q slippery ball. results of a misty rain that stopped just before game time. The turnout OF 5,032. q good portion Of it students, was considered poor for a Georgetown team that earlier had upset Holy Cross and Wake Forest. Better Things To Come. With the Hoyas on the upswing though, better teams will be scheduled and Georgetown hopes to attract larger crowds for their home games. That was the end Of the N. Y. U. series. Tulsa is coming back on the list next year and will be played here. Penn State also is being added next year but probably won’t be seen in Washington until 1851. Villanova, an acknowledged grid power, will show here later this year and also may be back in 1850. All that should mean better attendance. Coach Margarita has another idea about schedules that could improve the situation. He doesn’t like Friday night games. The two Georgetown efforts most displeasing to him this season were on Friday nights-the one at Mary land and that last night. A Fri day night game cuts out one day OF practice and he’s strongly against that. Sophomore Quarterback Frank Mattingly who came in to direct the Hoyas at the start of the second period after Bob Barry started was voted Georgetown’s most valuable player by news papermen covering the game. He gets a free suit. He directed the aerial drive that resulted In Georgetown’s first score In the second period. He Tailed himself In the third and also was at the helm for the final payof drive In the last period. Hoya Defenses Strong. Georgetown’s defenses were effective for the most part. particularry against passes. The Violets managed only four competitions in Is attempts. Guard Paul Win termeyer and Tackle Jim Ricca anchored line defenses that slowed N. Y. us ground game. The Violets did get 172 yards by rushing and the biggest cut Of that was by Bill Payne, Negro halfback from New Jersey who was the fastest man on the field last night He scored the Violets’ only touch down with 60-yard sprint early In the fourth quarter to cut into the 14–0 lead the Hoyas had at that point. Also notable was Lou Surman’s punting with a 40-yard average on eight boots. Despite the slippery ball, Mat tingly completed Of Is passes. Most Of Georgetown’s 62-yard scoring drive in the second period was through the air. A 43-yarder to Bob Noppinger reached N. Y. US 10. and after a running play lost ground, Mattlingly tossed q a. yard I’D to Billy Conn. Dick Haesler converted this and other G. U. scores. The third-period drive was good for II yards. It. too. was q quickie with 33-yard pass to Surman and another Of IS to Dick Losh. Losh stumbled on the while in the clear. Mattingly completed the drive with a quarterback sneak. In the final frame Conn ended the scoring on a perfectly executed 23-yard mousetrap play. He scooted through right guard and cut to his left to outspeed N. Y. U. defenders. The Violets rarely threatened. They reached Georgetown’s 20 once with the aid Of penalties and on another occasion made it to the Is. but pass interruptions hurt. The Hoyas pulled in five Grant heaves. Joe Pallotta particularly doing well in that respect. GEORGETOWN. Left ends--Noppinger. schmitt. Left tackles-Sheridan.
