Maryland Continued From Page BID didn’t have much Of a passing at tack. and in playing careful foot ball Maryland tried only five passes and completed just one of those. 1t was rugged, bruising game considering the unreasonable weather and Maryland gave a good account of itself. Out here the folks think Michigan State can beat almost any team in the country, particularly after it held Michigan to 7–3, but this supposdely great team had to 60 all the way to beat Maryland, team it held in great disrespect. The Spartans were hard to convince that the left side of Mary lands line was tough to crack. Time after time the State ball carriers rolled right smack at Krouse. Bob Ward and Jake Row. den and time after time they were smacked down without a yard gained. The State rooters were high in praise of Krouse and Ward for their fine defensive play. The rushing attacks were about even, with 126 for State and 101 for Maryland, although the Terps gained most of their yardage after they were behind 14–7. Maryland made only one first down to States 10 in the first half. But it was in the air where Michigan State held edge, finally unwinding its passing attack after sputtering in the first half. The State rooters were awed by the precision of Maryland’s attack after Rowden recovered Lynn Chandnois’ tumble on the 18. Stan Lavine went right over center for eight yards in two cracks and Mighty. Mo Modzelewski, the second-leading ground-gainer of the day, made it first down on the eight. Seibert moved seven yards in dash to the one and Mighty Mo scored. Bob Dean converted it was Maryland by TO. Michigan State kept getting around Maryland’s 30-yard line and faltering in the first half. but in the third period State started to roll. After being penalized back to it’s own 49 States touted Half back Chandnois and Everett Grandelius took first-down passes from Gene Click to the Maryland 25. On fourth down from the 10, Click hit Dorne Dibble with a pass on the seven. Chandnois made six and Waters the touchdown. George Smith added the first of two extra points. A bit later in the period Mary land shifted to the double wing and State expected a pass from Lavine, but Stan started to run, fumbled and John Gilman recov- Iered for State on the Maryland “a. Chandnois personally took the ball to the five in three hard runs. Horace Smith ran wide to the right and was stopped. but on the next play ran just as wide to the left and was as alone as leper in the end zone as Click hit him with a touchdown pass. Seibert, Lavine and Mighty Mo were the yardage producers of a fourth-period drive that took Maryland from its own IA to the State 81, where Seibert lacked two yards of a first down on the fourth down. Maryland gained the ball one more time. Lavine completed “a fourth down 7-yard pass to Seibert that was the Terps’ only completion and left them short of a first down on their own IS. State took over and ran out the clock Michigan State had done a smart job Of plotting Maryland’s offense and the Terps just couldn’t move except for the touchdown
