Notre Dame Statement Is Due Today on Row Over Officials SOUTH BEND, Ind. Oct. A. The case OF footballs screen test that got Coach Frank Leahy’s Irish up Is over as far as Notre Dame is concerned. The pictures were Of the Irish Huskies contest a year ago. After viewing the film, the Of ficials went out and penalized Notre Dame 1875 yards on 10 major tnfractions. But the irish moved forward more than backward and won, 27–7. -. Today Notre Dame officials were expected to issue a statement with the desire to close the episode. A spokesman said it would embody q reply to q statement made by q University Of Washington regent in Seattle last night that the Huskies never again would sched- >ule a football game with Notre Dame. 1--WE can get plenty OF games with name teams” said the regent, who asked his name be>withheld, without having to subject our players to the kind Of football we saw Saturday” Notre Dame Bans OfIicials. The Pacific Coast Conference apparently looked upon the whole thing as a school affair and none Of the leagues business. “It is an internal affair Of the University Of Washington” said Victor O.. Schmidt. Pacific Coast Conference commissioner. “and as such doesn’t concern the confer ence.” Saturdays game concluded a two-year, home-and-home series between Washington and Notre Dame. IRISH COACH FUMES OFF OVER GAME IN SEATTLE SATURDAY SOUTH BEND, Ind, Oct. 4-R-- Who got hurt the most in that Washington-Notre Dame football fracas Saturday-the Huskies or Irish Coach Frank Leahy? Four Washington backs and a lineman got damaged as Notre Dame belatedly turned on its steam at Seattle and rushed to a 27–7 victory. But Leahy’s feelings were hurt. He put big blast on the officiating and asserted we had to play four extra men” Notre Dame lost 135 yards in penalties in the contest, while Washington was set back 20. Lsahy sounded off immediately after the game. He still hadn’t cooled off by the time he reached Chicago last night. He repeated his charges: The officials did their best to protect coast conference football” {“ he declared angrily, adding he was tired of accepting incompetence politely and without comment” Howie Odell, coach of the Huskies, was taken somewhat aback by all this. He said in Seattle he was surprised and disappointed that MT. Leahy would make such a statement. They’re all good foot ball officials” Leahy was plenty bitter about the whole thing. The officials were Referee Thomas D. Wilson, from College of the Pacific; Umpire William Cor bus, Stanford; Head Linesman w.. H. Frazer, Gonzaga, and Field Judge Elwood T. Starrbuck, Chi cago.
