Heels Unleash Second Half Attack to TroCe by Duke 20 to 0 Justice Rages, Rodgers Romps 10 Victory Chapel Hill, Nov. 20-The University of North Carolina S vaunted Tar Heels today swept to a decisive 700 victory over arch-rival Duke University’s Blue Devils in a last-llalf offensive that gave them three straight over Duke for the first time in the history Of the long rivalry. The Tar Heels kept their unbeaten streak intact and made a bid for more national recogniton and a possible major bowl bid by unleashing their vaunted power for three touchdowns in the last two periods after a scoreless first half. Charlie (Choo-Choo) Justice , Cardinals leading All-American candidate, indicated his fitness for the post by scoring the first Tar Heel touchdown on a brilliant 43-yard run then by pass ing to star end Art Weiner in the end zone for the second . Hosea Rodgers, big Carolina full back, was at his best today, tear ing great holes in the Duke for ward wall and figuring in the last touchdown or a Rodgers : Weiner pass. The game, a colorful affair on every OCCASION, was played today in perfect football weather here in Cardinals beautiful Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels wore their “lucky” powder-blue jerseys and the Blue Devils were in their white jerseys with blle numerals. Carl Snaveley and Wallace Wade, two of the leading exponents Of the single wingback for nation, matched wits again, with Wade turning in the second half to the short-punt or diamond T” formation to try and score on the Tar Heels. The capacity crowd Of 44,500 fans jam-packed into the stadium watched the Blue Devils, aided no little by the fine punt ing of Fred Folger, keep the Tar Heels back in their own terri tory until late in the second quarter. The Blue Devils put on three drives which carried into Carolima territory In the first half, one going as faf as the q before they were checked. Fol ger and Mounie, doing most of the ball-handling for the Bl u e Devils, figured prominently n the ground-gainiag which netted six first downs for Duke, how ever nine attempted Blue Devil passes all missed fire. Late in the half Carolina got rolling for the first time after a Folger kick had set them back on their own Vineyard line. With Rodgers, Justice and Kennedy running the ball the Tar Heels moved SO yards TO the Duke % before fourth-down pass from Rodgers was intercepted by Dukes Louis Viau on the rs to halt the drive just before the half ended. Early in the third period Carolima moved into Duke territory again, with Rodgers making one run of % yards from the mid field stripe to the Duke % after it looked as though he would be sqarmed under for loss on a pass attempt. A 15-yard penalty for having an ineligible pass receiver down the field set the Tar Heels back, then Justice angled a coffin-corner punt out on the Duke seven. Folger punted to Maceyko on third down and gave Carolina the ball on the Duke 43. On the first play from scrimmage Justice cut over the line, almost fell over his interference but kept going, picked up block ers then reversed his field entirely to cross the goal line on his feet while Carolina fans roar ed their approval. After the touchdown Bob Cox missed his third try al an extra point in 30 attempts and the Tar Heels were ahead 6 to O. After the Carolina score t h e Blue Devils trotted out the diamond T formation on offense with Frye quarterbacking under the center.
