Justice Has Big Day As Tar Heels Ron,p Over Virginia, 34–12 I’m q Tar Heel born, a Tar Heel bred, and when die I’ll. be a Tar Heel dead” rang loud and often over Scott Stadium today in celebration of North Carolina’s 34–12 triumph over the University of Virginia and its invitation to the Sugar Bowl at New Orleans on New Year Day. As usual, the most terrific Tar Heel of them all was 165-pound Charlie Justice, who should demand a recount if he Is not q unanimous all-America. A crowd of $4,000, largest ever to see a game here, watched the brilliant Junior halfback dance 80 and AZ yards over slippery turf for touch downs, pass for two others and set up the fifth. North Carolina thus completed its best unbeaten season in more than so years and ran its string Of games without loss to II. The Tar Heels never were in trouble as they took 2l-0 lead early in the second quarter and then added two late scores after Virginia became a bit ram bunctious. Anxious for Bowl Game. The guess work as to Carolina’s address on New Year Day was declared over before the game when the Tar Heels learned the Sugar Bowl was theirs for the taking II they defeated Virginia. The Tar Heels were anxious to accept the bid as they lost to Georgia, 21-l0, there two years ago. They will play Okla homa there this year. Virginia stopped Justice occasionally today. but after all the fellow is only human. The Cavaliers were hitting him little hard and finally drew an unsportSmanlike conduct penalty late in the game for piling on. Justice played the entire game on offense. Virginia, accused Of being a panty-waist team on several occasions this season, suddenly became tough after trailing, 21-o, and from the middle of the second period until the middle of the fourth the Cavaliers dominated the game. They bafiied the Tar Heels with a bar rage of short passes-13 were COM pleted-and they sent an assortment Of backs chopping into the Carolina defensive line for 143 yards by rushing. Clock Runs Out. Carolina gained possession Of the ball only five time in the first half. Three times Carl Snaveley’s men scored, once they fumbled on the II and, at the halftirne gun, they were trying desperately to run play from the 1-yard line before the clock caught up with them. 1t did. The Tar Heels did not punt in the entire first half. Carolina drove 81 yards for q touchdown the first time it gained the pigskin with Hosea Rodgers carrying it over from the S after Bob Kennedy helped with a 17-yard spurt and Justice sprinted 10 yards to the S. After a bad pass from center stopped the Tar Heels on the Virginia II, Virginia kicked out and Justice took to the air. Most of the credit for the second touchdown, however, goes to Art Weiner. who made Joe Di Maggie catch Of a 19-yard Justice pass on the Virginia 20 and raced to score. Runs 80 Yards. Five minutes later, Justice made the Carolina track coach envious. After Virginia punted into the end zone and the ball was put in play on the 20, Justice cut straight through the middle, faxed the Virginia secondary out of his path and sprinted 80 yards in nothing fiat for his first touchdown. Not hand was laid on him. Carolina packed its last two touchdowns into the last five min utes in scoring it’s 9th victory in the South’s oldest football rivalry. Justice passed from the Virginia 81 to Bob Cox, who shared the ball on the two and stepped over to score. Two minutes later, Kennedy took punt on the Virginia AZ, handed the ball to Justice and Choo-Choo cut in and out down the sidelines for Al yards for his eighth touch down against Virginia in three years. Cox converted four out of five times for the Tar Heels. Virginia scored on two short passes. From the Tar Heel eight in the second period Dick Michaels barely hit Myron Mausteller before the latter ran out of the end zone. In the third quarter Bernie Gill ran wide and Joe McSary hit him in the corner of the end zone. Both of Carlton Elliott’s extra point trys were wide. The Virginia stands had worked up a case of enthusiasm at this point, but the Cavaliers never again left their own territory despite some
