1o48 Season to Be Monument To BoII-Corrying CoIlegions In this era of the glorified forward pass 1t is nice to note that college football still has boys who can carry the mail. The fading 1948 season, in fact. promises to be monument to the hard-working athlete who lugs by land. Ed Price, Tulane’s churning full back. almost is certain to become the third player of big-.ime team in 10 years to pass the l,000-yard mark in rushing. At least a half-dozen others are likely to join the 100 yards a game club” an exclusive organizaton to which only II men have been admitted in the last decade. Price rolled up 134 yards in Tulanes 35–13 victory over Baylor last Saturday to increase his seasons ground yardage to s92 and to become the Nations second most effective ball toter. National Collegiate Athletic Bureau statistics show the rushing depart ment still is led by Fred Wendt of Texas Mines, who with 1,057 yards promises to give the little Border Conference its third straight cham pion in this speciality. Virginia’s Papit a Threat. Rudy Mobley of Hardin Simmons was top ground gamer in 1916 and Wilson Davis of the same school won the honor last year. They had better than 1000-yard seasons, as did Gene Roberts Of Chattanooga in 1896 Mobley also topped 1000 in 1912. But the only other player of the recognized bigger schools to achieve the goal in the last decade were Frankie Sinkwich of Georgia, who rolled up 1,103 yards in 1941 and Bob Fenimore of Oklahoma, who gained I,04S in 1945. Needing only 108 yards to hit the 1000 pole, Price appears a cinch to do 1t in two remaining games against Cincinnati Saturday and Louisiana State the week after. Wendt and Price are averaging better than 100 yards game along with John Papit Of Virginia, Gil Stephenson of Army and Wilson Davis of Hardin-Simmons. Jackie Jensen of California, Bobby Stuart Of Army. Jay Van Noy Of Utah State and Harry Szulborski of Purdue are within reach Of the door handle to the select society. Finks Approaches Record. Only II players in 10 years have averaged 100 yards game. Among them were Tom Harmon OF Mich igan, Bill Dudley of Virginia, Steve Van Buren Of L. S. u. Glenn Davis Of Army, Fenimore and Sinkwich. Stan Heath of Nevada, idle this week, maintains his leadership in forward passing and total offense.
