GOPHERs’ CLEAN VICTORY. Northwestern Defeated by Score of .... Fl to d, Minneapolis, Nov. 20. - Victory again Minnesota’s, and by h convincing score of 81 to O.. Northwest ern’s gritty and clever football players could not stand against the terrific charges of the big North Star men, though they played a splendid game and used their heads in every play. The dash and brilliance Of tn North western team at the outset aston ished the rooters for the Gophers. Ell lott and Johnson, the Evanstonian ends, caused frequent gasps for breath on the part OF the 5000 Minnesotans who were out to see the game despite the cold and threatening weather. This was only in the early part OF the first half, however. The grand stand before long discovered that Minnesota was playing one of the fastest games of the season. Hoyt and Aune showed a SPEED quite equal to that exhibited by Johnson and Elliott. Northrop field had seen nothing Of the kind before this fall.

Princeton’s utter weakness, it is but necessary to say that during the seventy minutes of play the orange and black made only two first downs and these were within ten minutes of the close of the game when Princeton took temporary brace. The Tigers linemen were beaten back, battered down and trampled upon in manner that must have made the hearts of the loyal sons of Old Nassau bleed with sympathy. Both teams fought desperately, but Yale’s superior strength and better phys zeal condition enabled her to score comparatively easy victory. The Tigers could make no impression on Yale’s line. 1t was veritable Gibraltar. The Princeton backs were frequntly TIL two first downs mad by the orange and black were the result of end runs. One on a dash by McClave around Yale’s left end for fifteen yards and another by Reiter around the right end for six yards. Princeton would probably have done much better if she had resorted to end runs instead of line bucking. There appeared to be considerable feel ing between the players of the two teams throughout the game. There were many mixups. with the Princeton men the aggressors. Captain Pell set a bad example for his players by continually slapping the Yale end and tackle while in the line up. Several other of the Princeton for wards followed the lead set by Pell and as result the orange and black eleven were penalized three times. For Yale. Boomer. Chadwick, Hale, | Stillan and Frocks did the best offensive work. This quintet gained nearly all the ground made by Yale during the game. | The work of Shelton, Olcott, Brown and Gould on the defensive was brilliant, Mills, Losey and Wright did the best work for Princeton Reiter, on whom Princeton placed great hopes, failed to | advance the ball with any degree of sue cess, But Captain Pell was the disappointment of the Princeton eleven. He would dive into the Yale bluff inter ference while the runner would be going around the other side of the line. He did not seem to be able to follow the ball. Three times during the game Yale | carried the ball the entire length of the | field without once losing it, Twice she scored touchdowDs by this means, but ! the third time she was prevented from adding to her score by the blast of the | Illne-KSopCf whistle.
