TIE 4 !. ROCK |ZLlNDGAkI| Varsity Roys Feel Keenly the Re. suit of the Game With Northwestern. Coach Knipes and Others Regard It as Practically Defeat. For s. q. / Northwestern’s Strength q Great Surprise to ALI The Game Reviewed. Rock Island. ILL.,, Nov. 30.-1owa’s stalwart foot bali team, which swept Chicago off Its feet for total OF IL points and which battered down Mich iganss defense for total Of touch downs, besides adding goal from field, ran UP against stonewall line when 1t tackled DR.. HOLSTERS pupils from Northwestern University Hawkeye5 hopes and boasts of indisputable championship honors were blasted bemeath the blow, and the hitherto triumphant men from Iowa City had to be content with an even struggle. The score was 5 to5. To say that DR.. Knipe and his eleven Were surprised would be putting it mildly. They We’re simply astounded3 when they found the HOLSTER defense could stop the varied attacks. Iowa’ss only score came in the nature OF fiukel when Eby jostlea the ball out OF Eli otis arms on Northwestern’s forty five yard line and then, circling the left end, planted the oval behind the goal line just two minutes before time was called for the first half of the struggle. At no other time did the Iowa men get the ball within striking distance Of the purple goal. Northwestern made its score by a drop kick, which little John son toed squarely between the posts from the thirty-five yard line, only a few minutes before Fred Hayner blew his whistle, and the game was tie. Iowa in its disappointment still has the consolation that its goal line has not bsen crossed for two years. Iowa, however. feels that the game is almost a defeat, for the most conservative rooter from Iowa City thought the score would not be less than 81 points. equal to what Minnesota made agains, the purple. Bets Were laid at even money that Northwestern would not score and any odds demanded on tbs final result We’re given to the Evanston men. Some even Went so far as to place 10 10 that Northwestern would MOI; score. DR.. Knipe: The game was practical ~ i; defeat for us, and was not lit tie surprised at the way Northwestern stopped our plays. 1t was hard blow but l would rather have had HOLSTERS team do 1t than any one else. Our boy. did not put up the snap that they have shown in former games, but I have no complaint to offer” The famous interference that knip used for his end runs against Chicagt only a few weeks ago was powerless and not a single time did the fleet backs, Morton and Edison, circle the purple ends for sensational run. Pershaps there was not as much ginger IL the work of the iowa players as in their previous games. but 1t is certain that HOLSTERS men We’re generally able to get at the man with the ball. But there was an absence of end runs and open work In general. Hard drives into the line We’re the policy of both generals. but both teams were forced 10 kick often. Rock Island. Nov. Undetermined playing characterized the work of every man on each team. If5united, persistent spirit and good team work We’re made the criterion for summarizing the nlerita of the contest, ii would be unfair to say that either Mort hMestern or low lad the better of the argument. Saying this may appear to bee Equivalent 10 ar suing that the teams We’re evenly ] matched and that the final score tells | the story. However. critica and experts will gem i orally agree that all things considered Northwestern utplayed Iowa. In punt ling MachesreS5fcr Northwestern did ex. icellant work after few errors in the 4 beginning, altho his opponent Warner 1outpointed him by a close margin. Knipe’s men played the guards back i formation all but exclusively and Hollisters men played the tandem back land varied 1t only now and then with ar lend trial with johnson to Elliott. II i this point the plays on each side Were similar. Neither team scored point by these line bucking plays altho the i tandem back p!unging enabled North, western to move up to Iowa’s goal g i sufficient number of times to make tht successful drop kick. Iowa never coult have scored BY attempting to drive thru & the remarkably strong defense Of North q western. Granting these things. 1t j. only fair 10 say that Northwestern real Il ly outplayed and was entitled to the Ii, score If not clear victory. 4 On Northwestern’s side G. O.. OLD GOLD HARD HIT, Northwestern Breaks Even With Iowa in Brilliantly Played Game. ILLINOIS Is A GREAT SURPRISE Johnson Ties the Score With a Beautiful Kick From the Field. The three cities were yesterday treated to two of the closest and most exciting contests on the gridiron that have ever been witnessed in this vicinity. The morning game at Moline between the Moline and Chicago South Division High school teams furnished something of surprise for the home team and resulted in the score of 6 to in their favor. The afternoon game at Twelfth street park was decided surprise party on the State University of Iowa. The Hawkeye boys bucked and kicked and jammed and jumped over Northwestern’s line only to be held and thrown back and placed on the defensive during the greater part of the game. But once did they get near enough to the Illinois boys goal to try for place kick, and their sim gle touchdown was made on a rank fluke by Ward back of Northwestern ; line. Eby was the only man who had forced through and he grabbed the ball for a 50-yard run and touch down. Northwestern, on the other hand, had Iowa’s goal in jeopardy repeatedly and succeeded in a place kick only on the fourth attempt. Big Crowd Sees Game. About 5000 people saw the big game. Iowa rooters were in the ma jority, the big bleachers on the east side of the field being packed mostly with Davenport and Iowa City people, with enough confident students sprinkled about to keep the Iowa yell going. Across the field the long, low bleachers were not so we’ll filed and the crowd did not show much enthusiasm at first. MegaphOnes were scarce, but when the Illinois boys began to show their form they had all the encouragement their side of the field could muster. There were scarcely enough Northwestern students to give a good, resonant yell. The Iowa band was present and treated the crowd to music before and after the first half. Capt. Dietz played deliberate game. From his teams first appearance in town Wednesday afternoon they showed deliberation in all their acts, which set people wondering whether they were disPirited or whether they were saving energy The game showed it was the latter. During the game Northwestern constantly played for time. members of the team being continually stretched out on the field in apparent agony, and taking the 2-minute limit before suddenly reviv ing. Iowa’s play, on the other hand. was close and fast, and so long as they could rush matters they made gains. johnson and q. o. Dietz, for Northwestern, and Williams and Griffith, for Iowa, did the most telling work in generalplay- The field was but fair. being a tribe slippery from the freeze of the previous night and the thaw during the day. Illinois Kicks OF. The game was called at O’Clock.
