The 200-pound half back scored two touchdoWns and passed to third. It wasn’t all Gambino however as Quarterback Vic Turyn and Ha1fback Jim Larue also rolled up good totals in the ground-gaining attack that netted 274 yards. Also taking an important part in the Maryland victory was excellent defensive play all across the line which three times stopped Commodore threats deep in Maryland ter ritory. Particular standouts were Ends Elmer Wingate and Fred Davis, Center Gene Kinney and Tackle Ray Krouse. A crowd of $4,000 witnessed the game on a slow, but not muddy his 18th and 10Th of the season, giving him a point total of SO and keeping him we’ll out in front in the Southern Conference race. The defeat likely removes the Commodores from consideration for invitations to several bowl games for which they had received feelers, and at the same time renewed Mary lands chances, which took a drop after last weeks loss to North Carolima. The two touchdown -favorite VAN derbilt managed to score through Maryland’s tight defenses with a pass into the end zone only IL sec ondS before the maj gun. Helping keep Maryland in controll much of the way was the team S pass defense. one of the country’s best. On three occasions Johnny Idzik pulled in errant heaves from Vanderbilt Tailback Bob Berry, who until today hadn’t had one intercepti0n. Idzik’s first interception midway through the first period started Maryland toward a touch down from the Commodore AZ. Idzik dashed IL yards for first down on the Vandy 25, from which point Gambino took a lateral from Turyn and skirted left end-a favorite play for the Old Liners-to score his 18th touchdown of the year. Tom NC Hugh’s placement for the extra point was wide. InterceptiOn Sets Off Drive. Another Idzik interception of a Berry pass at the start of the sec ond frame set off another touchdown drive from Maryland’s 33. A pen atty for roughing the kicker helped Maryland reach Vandy’s As, and a 14-yard pass from Turyn to Davis got first down on the 80. There Gambino faded back and passed to Wingate on the goal line, his second I’D pass this season McHugh’s placement was good. The Commodores made a serious threat after this, recovering FUN bled lateral from Turyn to Larue on the Old Line %. They were stopped without much gain, however, and Maryland bounced back with 81 yard pass play from Turyn to Full back Harry Bonk that advanced to the Vandy 33. A Turyn pass was intercepted here to stop that threat Maryland threatened again open ing the third frame. driving from its 10 to the Vanderbilt 5. Good runs by Gambino, Turyn and Larue featured the drive and two roughness penalties helped Turyn’s fourth down pass from the. S was inter cepted in the end zone. Early in the fourth quarter q quick kick by Vanderbilt and weak return boot by Maryland gave the Commodores another chance on the Old Line a. Freshman Tailback Dean Davidson passed and ran the Commodores to the 10, where the Terrapin line braced. Midway through this frame the Old Liners got going again, starting from their own 80 and driving 68 yards to score The big gain here was a 51-yard dash through the middle and straight downfield by Larue. Gam bini finally crashed 1 foot through the middle for his second score OF the game. After Turyn twice had been repulsed on a quarterback sneak. McHugh converted. Vandy Finally Scores. Vanderbilt poured back through the air after this. Davidson’s pass ing led a drive from the Commodore 20 that wasn’t stopped until it reached the Maryland 2. Berry returned Maryland’s punt 20 yards to the 26, and a pass from Jamie Wade to Bucky Curtis reached the 9. From there, on fourth down, (see MARYLAND, Page B-4D
