Sewanee Comes Back On Grid as Unbeaten, Unscore;d0 Team NASHVILLE, Tenn, Oct. 31.-The Purple Tigers from sewanee. Tenn, are back in the front parlor again after lying on the doormat for 10 these many years. Along with Montclair, N. j., Teachers, Sewanee, is one of the two unbeaten, unscored-on football teams in the country. This years Sewanee team prob ably Is as near simon pure as any in the Nation, for the University Of the South has no athletic scholar ships and does not subsidize foot bali players. 1t has played no name” teams, but with total enrollment of only 500, has as formidable a football record as can be found in Dixie. In 1899, eight years after the Uni versity of the South had organized a. grid team under Coach F. G.. Sweat, an alumnus of Bowdoin Col lege at Brunswick, Me-, the Purple Tigers rode high. wide and hand some. They smacked over Louisiana State, Texas, Tulane, Mississippi and Texas A. and M. on consecutive days-scoring 81 points while all five opponents were held scoreless. Played to Great Record. That year also saw them defeat Tennessee, Auburn. North Carolina, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Cumberland and Southwestern, for season total of 322 points against 10 for all opponents. In the fall of 1921 the Tigers massacred Rice, 1920, but then came a steady decline in the uni versitys football fortunes as the game became a big business and, as present Athletic Director Gordon Clark puts it, “the other teams got too good for U.s.” After losing IS games in a row in 1878 and going winless in “a contests, the university withdrew from the Southern Conference. Football at the university now is on the same financial basis as the English department, and the uni versity underwrites its expenses. Every one at Sewanee who wishes may play football, and Win White, the best coach the university can hire, is provided to train aspiring gridders. There Is no dearth OF applicants, with eight States represented on this years squad OF 56. School Spirit Still High. Nine years after withdrawing from the Southern Conference, Clark says there are no regrets at Sewanee. The Purple Tigers take on Mary vile College (Tenn.) this week. but according to Clark school spirit Is running strong and bonflres leap Just as high as when they smacked down the mightest machines in the South. Their record this year includes a scoreless tie with Presbyterian College, a 40 to 0 defeat Of Kenyon College, “A to o win over Mississippi College and 8 to 0 defeat of South western.
