H 3 :;,x Q G !: 4 > ! r& 2 IsZsXAls- -&AAa 99ezE2 UCLA KEEPS TOP OF HEAD ALONG SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 21.-Af ter last weeks rugged football ses- sions. involving an upset or two the west coast gridiron story today remains the Same-the best team until beaten is the University of California at Los Angeles. The UCLA Bruins, perched atop inc coast conference standings and four times winners over stout op- position, improved their position in the dash to the Rose Bowl with a 1916 win over a surprisingly strong University of California eleven. The Bruins lined up to l favorites They were lucky to escape with Vhcle skins. Defeated, the Bears outplayed their southern cousins Tor a goodly part of the game at Berkeley which attracted some 65,00O fans. In some respects, the Bruins lost while win- ming. Their leading ground gainer and ace right halfback, Cal Rossi suffered a broken right leg, above the ankle And their clever field general, southpaw quarterback Ernie Case, went out of the contest with a broken nose. Nevertheless, UCLA is setting the championship pace, unbeaten, and may have hurdled the toughest ri- vals, namely oregon State, Wasli- ingtcn, Stanford and California Unless University of Southern Cal ifolnia, c-season conference fa- vcrite, has finally hit it’s stride. Sizzling Ccmc back Southern California heartened supporters with a sizzling come back. after losses inside and out of the conference, by overwhelming Washington, 23–0. It was a re- sounding reply to the general ques- tion Of what was wrong with a use eleven that had bowed to Ohio State, 21–0 and to oregon State, GO, the latter league af- fair. This weeks headliner may give further light on the Southern Cal ifornia enigma. The Trojans jour- ney to Palo Alto to take on the last working Stanford Indians. Some comparison between the championship-bound UCLA Bruins and the originally title-favored USC Trcjans may evolve from the meet ing between the Trojans and Stan fcrd. The latter lost to UCLA, 26–6 and the consensus is the Trojans will have to have their warhorse in real racing condition this Sat urday Stanford outscored Santa Clara, 33–26 in a non-c conference test Sat urday, Santa Clara’s hitherto strug- gling outfit being a bit of a sur prise package in the freefof-all. Santa Clara seems headed for an- other fall in it’s engagement with UCLA at Los Angeles this weekend, non-league in status. Other conference contests on the Oct 26 calendar send the up and coming California Bears against the Washington Huskies in the homecoming game at Seattle; Ore gon State against Washington State at Pullman and Oregon against Idaho at Moscow.
