CUP)-Army, Texas and U.CL.A, 100 percent upset proof” SO far in a season of form reversals, led the parade to- day as the 1946 football campaign approached the halfway point with Notre Dame still not fully tested and Tennessee back in the drivers seat in the unpredictable South. Those are the nations current big five. They’ll all be back in action this week and at least three will have to exert strong pressure to escape undefeated. Army’s powerful Cadets engage twice beaten but still dangerous Duke at the Polo Grounds in New York, Notre Dame plays at Iowa which down the years, has been the No. l jinx team for the Irish and Texas goes up against Rice an out fit the Longhorns fear more than any remaining on their schedule. Tennessee Has Breather Tennessee, 8 12 to 0 victor over Alabama’s sputtering Rose Bowl champions last week, picks up an easier assignment in Wake Forest and U.C.L.A., which squeezed past California, 13 to 6, plays Santa Clara. Although favorites over the na- tion absorbed higher percentage of defeats than usual last Satur- day, the top teams held their ground. Army, ignited by Felix (Doc) Blanchard’s four touchdowrs, plunged Columbia from the unde- feated ranks, 48 to Is and Bobby Layne’s three touchdown passes dumped previously unbeaten Ar kansas, 20 to 0. Tennessee, scoring twice on sustained marches, four times braced near it’s own goal to ward off Alabama drives engineered by Harry Gilmer’s passes and U.CL.A. often was in danger of another upset by California which had whipped St. Mary’s the week before. Duke had Al to breather with Richmond before tackling Army, Iowa prefaced its meeting with Notre Dame by eliminating 1n- dianas Big Nine champions from the Conference race, 13 to 0, and Rice warmed up” for Texas by de- feating Southern Methodist in a Southwestern Conference game, 21 to T. However, Santa Clara, which meets U.C.L.A. this week, lost to Stanford, B to 26, and Tennessees next foe, Wake Forest, dropped a IA to 6 Southern Conference dec1- sion to North Carolina State. Out in the Big Nine, last weeks so-called title game between the only two teams unbeaten in Con- ference competition wound up in a IA to IA standoff between North western and Michigan. Purdue and Ohio State also played IA to IA tie, but Julie Rykovich led Illinois to two fourth period touchdowns which earned 27 to 21 victory over Wisconsin and Iowa scored twice in the first period to hand Indiana it’s second big Nine defeat, Min Ilesota whipped Wyoming, 46 to O, in a non-conference game.
