This Sporting World AppLesauce Just about this time of year, the annual football foolishness of sell ecting an “All-American” football team really gets under way. For the past few days, have been expect ing, almost hourly, to hear from my two prize pickers in this vicinity MT. Edward Keenan of Waterbury and MT. Clarence Haigh of Naug- atuck. Both men have made re- markedly good selections during past years, which, l. why would like to present the first of them, which arrived via telephone yester- day from my Naugy stlector. Harry Grayson of NEA selected eleven first string Army players as the NEA All-America of 1945-- and let it go at that. Of course, the foolishness of All-America selecting is this: ordinary reason, aside from official records of individual per- formances over the entire season, precludes the possibility that BLEW FEN college football players picked as team, are better performers on the football field than any other individuals throughout the country. In reference to MT. Grayson’s all- Army, aIl-America selections, have in mind, George Taliferro, sterling Indiana Negro halfback, who has been primarily responsible for the Hoosier Hot Shots winning the Big Ten Conference title last Saturday; plus the fact that he has been 8 standout player in every Indiana game this season in which he took part. Neither MT. Grayson nor MT. Haigh gives him a nod in their sel- ections; though Bo McMillan’s $ Hoosiers have gone through the sea- son undefeated, with wins and one tie, a TT count with North western. They have scored 279 points against 56 for 10 opponents, including wins over Michigan, H. linois, Nebraska, Iowa, Tulsa, Min nesota, Pitt and Purdue; and give a gander at the scores: Michigan lost 7–13; Illinois lost 0–6; Nebraska lost 14–54; Iowa lost 20–52; Tulsa lost 2–7; Minnesota lost, 0–49; Pitt lost 0–19 and Purdue was beaten 0–26 last Saturday. So, the $64 ques- tion arises: how can you leave George Taliferro off ANY All America team? Clarence Haigh of Naugatuck comes up with these selections, which are excellent, as follows: Dick Duden, Navy, left end; Savits- ky, Penn, left tackle; Green, Army, left guard; Mancha, Alabama, cen- ter; Amling, Ohio State, right guard; Coulter, Army, right tackle; Betchol, Texas, right end; Gilmer, Alabama, quarterback; Davis, Army, e f t-halfback; Wedemeyer, St. Mary’s, right-halfback and Blan- chard, Army, fullback. Four of eleven places for Col. Red Blaik’s S boys. Whadda YOU think?

With burly Pete Pihos, rough and tumble ex-paratrooper-bulling his way to the first two of Indiana’s four touchdowns, the Hoosiers finished with a near-perfeet record of nine victories and IT conference tie with North. western. The boilermakers lived up to old oaken bucket tradition by battling Indiana to a scoreless tie in the first half. But relentless Hoosier power unleashed by Pihos and George Taliaferro, great Negro halfback, and quarterback Der Raimondi’s superb passing ripped Purdue’s defenses to shred in the last two periods.
