CRUSADER, GAEL BOWL ROOMS GO BUST, BUT GOOD Four Major Unbeaten Clubs Remaining Topped by Cadets, Crimson Tide NEW YORK, Nov. 19-The na- tional championship, several sec tional races and the very confused bowl situation today remained to be cleared up as the collegiate football campaign neared it’s con- clusion. ArEir and Navy went into train ing for their championship clash in Philadelphia Dec. l. but the Big Ten, Big Seven and Big Six chases were slated to be decided this Thursday and Saturday. The bowl picture, never a clear one at best because of the weekly batch of upsets, became cloudier than ever today following the surprise defeats of St. Mary’s, Holy Cross and Penn State Saturday. Heading the list of contenders for the post-season contests were the four remaining major unbeaten and united elevens-Army, Alabama, Oklahoma A. & M, and Virginia. Army, which rolled up it’s seven- teenth straight victory in two years by trouncing Pennsylvania 61–0 Saturday, topped the field for the Rose Bowl Whether the Cadets would accept an invitation still was debatable, but Maj. Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, Superintendent of West Point, said after the Penn massa- ere that he was considering the matter, although he emphasized that the Army has not received even a feeler for a New Years Day game. Alabama was rated the second choice for the Pasadena classic and the No. l nominee for any other bowl game in which it would like to play The Red Elephants cap tured the southeastern title by walloping Vanderbilt 71–0 and still have two games to go. Oklahoma A. & M became much sought after club following it’s 46–6 whipping of good Texas Tech squad. Virginia, which was overlooked in the early hunt for bowl teams with it’s weak schedule, also became desirable attraction with it’s un- blemished record. Five minor college teams still undefeated and united are Oberlin, Gustavus Adolphus, Arkansas Tech Arizona, and Redlands. Arkansas Tech won it’s sixth victory Friday against Henderson. UCLA’s 13–7 last quarter win over St. Mary’s made easier the problem of selecting western rep resentative for the Rose Bowl. The western choice is restricted to a member of the Pacific Coast Con ference and the UCLAns (2-D now stand as the top contender al- though Southern California 3–1, Washington 6–2, and Washington State 5–2, lead them in the loops standings. The UCLAns, who lost 13–6 to Southern California in the campaign, can cop the nomination by beating California this Saturday and by taking the Trojans in their repeat game Dec. 1.
