Wide Open Maryland Attack 0yerwheIms Merchant Marine “We played hard but made enough mistakes to last us the rest of the season.” said Paul Bryant, summing up Maryland’s smashing 22–6 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy last night at Col lege Park. But Bryant was in the minority Old Liners in the throng of 1000 saw nothing wrong with the team. They reveled in the wide-open Of tense that produced three touch downs and field goal and kept the action moving at break-neck pace. Bryant may be right but he’ll have an argument on that score. Before the game the coach’s big gest worry was whether to shoot the works to preserve an unblemished record or play safe and save some thing for future Southern Confer ence foes. His boys solved that problem by helping themselves to a 1876 lead in the first half. The Terps didn’t have to use their bag of tricks to sew 1t up. They had the power. speed and daring to run over the visitors. Long Field Goal Amaxes. The customers couldn’t believe the 27-yard field goal they saw Ed Schwarz boot in the second period Not since Augie Lio’s days at George town and Harry Deming’s apprenticeship at George Washington have they seen a kicker who can blast ‘em like that. Actually it was closer to a 4o-yard kick. Maryland uncovered q scatback in little Bobby Piker to match Bruiser Harry Bonk’s line plunging Piker dashed 20 yards to snap a sail deadlock in the second period and added the Terp’s third marker on a 27-yard end run in the third period. Bonk got the first on a 2-yard line plunge. The Mariners came up with a hard-running offense themselves, but 1t couldn’t match Maryland’s. S. With Gene Fuhrman, Jack Nc Crane and Stormy Pohl doing most of the work, the Sailors travelled So yards for a touchdown after pouncing on Maryland tumble in the first period. Thereafter they were pretty much bottled up in their own territory. Terps Intercept Five Passes. Maryland’s alert pass defense snagged five Mariner aerials, but there were a couple of times when fortune favored them with Sailor receivers out In the clear and passes thrown by McCrane would have gone for long gains If not touch downs. Maryland’s hard-charging line, featured by 245-pound Larry Cooper’s work at tackle, prevented the Academy passer from doing his best work.
