State Hopes To Cancel Duke, UNC Games FEW PLAYS CARRY PENN TO VICTORY Little OF Columbia Tells How Lions Held Army In LIST Half NEW YORK, Oct. 1S-(REPennsylvania has stormed successfully through the first four OF its ls45 of 10 plays-seven running, three mass PLAYS and three from punt formation. George Munger, youthful GRID t-u tor of the Quakers who was mere for the weekly meeting OF the New York Football Writers, SAID giving the players so few lorna tons was the best way of conserving the limited practice time avail able. “After all, if it is executed perfectly every time, a team needs only one play” he added. The Quakers’ meager repertoire has approached perfection o e n enough that t h e Pennsylvanians have gathered 1863 points in their four victories to % for their opponents. Without reaching for the crying towel, Munger said his team was MT “that good” because six of the seven present linemen were in a different position from that which they occupied a year ago and the seventh was Center John McCloskey, formerly a Pittsburgh fresh man but without collegiate expert ence. Herb Nelson, the transplanted end now classed as one of the best tackles in the east, was praised by Munger as was Bob Odell, ball carrying back of year ago and now the Qua.ers’ blocker, w h o never has missed tackle” At the same meeting Lou Little of Columbia explained the defense which held the U. S. Military Academy’s Information to lat yards in the first half, including an 82-yard touchdown run by Glenn Davis. He told how his forwards were stationed a foot and half behind the line of scrimmage and how the extra step which the Cadet linesmen had to take to reach their rivals made it virtually i’m possible for them to “split” the Columbians for big gains. Davis run was set up when an ambitious halfback left his post and came up to help tackle the ball carrier while he was going sc yards across the field to the sidelines,” Little explained, “then when Davis turned there was no one to stop him.” Still speaking in whisper following a midsummer throat operalton, Little added that the defense also brought added yardage to Co. | 1umbia because the West Pointers started cropping for the shy Lions with their hands and were penal lied. In the first half Army gained only IS yards, excluding the Davis run. and lost IS yards by penalties, ‘‘But in the second half, tn e game went the way I thought it would” concluded Little.
