Intercollegiate . Football Review By JOE NOLAN The chap who said that watched pot never boils was as poor 8 judge as a bloodhound tracking down a tUlrnip. Saturday, while countless thousands lookd on, the old football pot boiled over like Kentcky moon- shine in a mountain still, and echoes and repercussions are still being heard from the far-f1ung campuses of the nation. Yale’s Elis-the little men who weren’t there-weren’t there again Saturday against Navy, and once more Chapel street has become 8 boulevard of broken dreams. Hughie Knowlton’S passing gave the Blue its lone touchdown, while the rough and tumbly sailors were chalking up two markers. Can’t Win Syracuse took advantage of two fumbles inside the 25-yard line to turn back the Holy Cross eleven which, incidentally, is having a harder time winning this fall than a blind man at roulette wheel. The Crusaders chalked up first downs with the ease and precision of a billiard player preparing his cue, but at the crucial moments the H.C. backs just couldn’t manage to find the handle on the bail. Lieutenan-C Colonel Bernie Bier man, who has known all the foot ball answers for so long that he’s making up & new set, saw his per- sonal winning streak of q games come to an unexpected end against Notre Dame. With pitch-mighty Bert Bertelli, and high-stepping backs Livingstone, Clatt, and Cow hig leading the way, the Ramblers never gave the previously unbeaten and seemingly unbeatable Seahawks a chance to get started. Dick Fish CT, the Seahawks’ passing wizard, was Smothered by the hard charging Irish Hnemen, and his receivers Nal Kutner, Matt Bolger and Jud Ring CT were covered like a bunion by a corn plaster. For once, Fordham’s Rams didn’t even stop to spell their names for the opposition. The result: a 23–14 victory over West Virginia. Colgate’s bowl-bound express was left at the station by the Duke Blue Devils who were themselves stranded in Virginia on the trip northward. Arriving shortly before game time, the Duke boys could hardly wait to get into their uni- forms and push over pair of touchdowns before the Red Raiders could say Demetrius Papodiomon- topolous. By then it was too late, and the Southerners drove goal ward thrice more before the final gun. Harvards Scalped The inexperienced Harvard back field carried the pigs pajamas all around the field for quite spell before Dartmouths Indians took the situation in hand. It was all good practice for Dick Harlow’s charges, but that was about all they got out of it, for the jackrabbity Indian backs scored twice in the second half and took the game back with them to Hanover. Boston College and Army strength ened their claims to the title of the “class of the East” with 7–6 deci- sion over the favored North Caro- lima Navy squad, and Army with runaway against Columbia. In Boston it was a case of the HiaynIy T0YNrn1Ivy nad nNvN green smearing the green, with ganging up on Coach Jimmy Crow ley. A Connolly to Currivan pass gave Boston its touchdown and Con- molly lofted the deciding extra polnU. Later when one or MT. Crow ley’s boys started goalward with mo- body closer to him than the next county, Currivan put on burst of speed and made the bootleg dasher sit down and think things over. Mule Kicks Lion The Army team showed classy backs in herds, droves and catego- ries as they ran and passed the Co., lumbia Lions into the ground, de- spite the gallantS efforts of Paul Governali. Final score: Army 34, Governai 6. Pennsylvania, supposed to be one of the countrys best, finished up in the Lost and Found column at the end of the week. The Quakers Lost” the offensive drive which had worked so devastatingly against Yale and Harvard; Found” sup posedly feeble Princeton by far the best of the Big Three teams. As result, the scores compiled by the Penn wonder boys. and the Prince- ton boys who had them wondering were as hard to tell one from the other as are the Mesdemoiselles
