Invaders After Initial Victory 0fCampaign Proctor and Burnett Their Aces; CoIonioIs Relying on Bernot For the last time this season George Washington Universitys football team will enter an engage ment at no worse than even money tonight when it tangles with Fur man at Griffith Stadium at 8:15. After tonight the Colonials will bite into the rough portion of their schedule and will be underpuppies in every game. George Washington walked over Western Maryland and Richmond and dropped closer decision to The Citadel than the 14–2 score would indicate, but the Colonials won’t be favored over Furman despite that the Purple Hurricane hasn’t won a game. Furman has been keeping classy company. 1t tied Virginia Tech, TT: then was walloped by Georgia. 40–7. Last week it gave powerful Wake Forest a neat argument before drop ping 14–6 decision. In five years the invaders have been held score less only three times. In Dewey Proctor and Jim Bar nett, the Purple Hurricane report edly has two of the South’s more talented backs. but Furman knows what Paul McNutt is talking about when he speaks on shortage of man power. Furman will invade with the smallest collegiate squad to hit the Capital in years, importing only % men. Furman Men Double in Jobs. From last years squad of As players only II returned, others be- Ing graduated, indicted into the Army or missing for other reasons. Only half of Furmans 1941 fresh man team reported back this fall so Furman thus faces its toughest schedule of all time with it’s smallest squad of all time. For both Furman and G. w. the game represents their rosiest opportunlty of winning again this year, Furman hereafter will meet Ten nessee, Miami, The Citadel, South Carolina and Clemson. while the Colonials will be battling William and Mary, Kentucky, Clemson, Wake Forest and Georgetown. Coach Dizzy Mcleod of Furman is trying to offset the lack of mate rial through the medium of teaching each player the assignments for at least two positions. Paul Sizemore, a l90-pound, 6-foot-2-inch specimen, has been converted from q back into an end, but if the Purple Hurricane comes up with an injured ball carrier, he probably will return to the backfeld. Operating next to each other in the Furman lineup will be Brothers Fred Hilliard, 195-pound guard, and Roy Hilliard, 190-pound center. Proctor and Barnett are the glory guys of the backfield but 160- pound Wilbur Coyle and Ralph Hamer also are rated dangerous ball toters. Colonials Rely on Bernot. Against The Citadel last week the Colonias unveiled a line-shattering back in l90pound Joe Bernot, who staged personally conducted tour through the Cadets line for 43 yards before G. W.’s drive was halted l inch from pay dirt. Twelve straight times Bernot lugged the ball on that trip into The Citadel’s territory and on an other march he carried seven of eight times. He was a weary, tot tering boy when he left the field, but he showed himself to be bullish character and Coach Johnny Baker is hoping more diversified general ship will enable the Colonials to capitalize on his talent tonight. Outstanding in the c. w. line were John Koniszewski, 215-pound tackle, and Guard Ellis Hall. Two of the Colonials’ few experienced performers, the hard-hitting seniors repeatedly squelched The Citadel’s running attack after the Cadets romped to f1rst-period touchdown.
