cOLoNIALS Air Defense FuIters in Second Half A George Washington alum nus, obviously as upset over the slim crowd of 6.100 attending the 27–22 loss to The Citadel, asked Coach Jim Camp what is needed to attract more wit Inesses. Play SyracuseP Or Navy2 Or what? NO” Camp answered quickly. AL we need is a win” He didn’t say it. but the CIV coach probably is wondering If the win will come this season. The schedule Is one-third COM pleted without q victory and there is no letup in sight. With losses to Virginia Mill tary, Furman and The Citadel behind them, the Colonials now look ahead to Virginia Tech, lVillanova, William & Mary West Virginia, Brigham Young and Vanderbilt, In that order CIV will have to show marked improvement on defense to beat any one of them. Petno Best Receiver The trouble Friday night at DC. Stadium was that CIV had too much to defend against, Coach Eddie league Of The CT tadel said that the CIV defense almost forced his quarterbacks Wade st. John and Joe Can narella, to throw to Vince Pet no, the wide end. CIV couldn’t cope with him and that was the ball game. The Citadel threw only once to Petno in the first half and he bobbled the ball as he was falling out of the end zone. The Bulldogs scored q few plays la ter, anyway, to tie the score at TT. A 38-yard field goal by Mark Gross gave CIV a TOlead at intermission. Petno said that league didn’t actually change any thing at halftime, but it wal obvious the word was given Il the quarterbacks to fling tn, ball to their best pass receiver The Colonials were trying tt cover everything, the rushes b! Fullback Nick DiLoreto as vel as all the receivers, and thii left only one man to handle Petno. Six Passes Completed I’VE found that CIV was moi covering Petno as other teams have DONE” league explained when it comes to one-on-one we feel Vince can beat his man They forced us to throw tt him” st. John completed six out Of seven passes in the second hall and all six went to Petno. accumulating 106 yards, and on five occasions the completion picked up either a big first down or a touchdown. With this kind Of throwing loosening up the defenses, Dill oreto added SO yards rushing ir the second half for a total. Of l06 and a touchdown. / st. John scooted for another touchdown on an option pass run play, and not even a great night by GW’s Dick Drummonc could overcome the cross-fire.
