Yale Wa||ops Lehigh To Open Season in Sparkling Style Score Of 1876 Largest Attained by Eli Since Campaign Of 1885 NEW HAVEN, Conn.,, Oct. g. Moving along the turf and through the air in impressive style, Yale’s football team walloped Lehigh, 1885, in their first meeting in 26 years today in the bowl before 10000 fans The victors unleashed roaring four touchdown attack in the final half to clinch the hard-fought contest. In winning it’s opener for it’s new coach, 31-year-old HOWE Odell, Yale rolled up its highest score since 1885, and if it doesn’t win another game this season at least will have tied its record of the last two campaigns, when it won one of eight games in 1910 and 1941. But the form which Yale dis played in the third and final quarters, after Gall half, should make the Blue hard team to lick this campaign, and even remove it from the gridiron doghouse. Although he didn’t tally himself, Hugh Knowlton of Syosset, N. Y, showed talented pitching arm that connected for three OF Yales scores. A 27-yard dash by Ed Taylor of Columbia, S. c., and a 26-yard run by Will Overlook or River Forest, ILL.,, on an intercepted pass accounted for the victors’ other touch downs. Herb Shoener of Maplewood, N. j.. bulled his way through the middle OF Yale’s wall to account for Lehigh S only score in the second quarter. Knowlton’s short pass to Tim Hopes of East Aurora, N. Y, culminating 56-yard drive, put Yale in front early in the game. A sim liar toss, this time to Ed Town OF Narbeth, Pa, in the third quarter broke the 6-all tie and ended a 65yard parade. Knowlton’s final touch down pitch was 35-yard strike tc Frank Mahoney of Troy, N. Y.

Brooklyn Dodgers Aduance To Football Lead .YALEFOLLOWERS. PICK UP HOPES New Team Impressive in 33–6 Win Over Lehigh; Penn Provides Real Test Yale UniversitylS football rooters, agreeably astoniShed at the Eli,s 33 to 6 victory over Lehigh Saturday, began hoping today that the worm has turned and that Yale, under new head coach Howie Odell, has come upon better days. Yale’s tally of 9 points, largest in the memory of the present student body, and perhaps the previous student body, convinced som e dougters that youthful MT. Odell had given the Ellis just what they needed for new deal--vigor and fight. Lehigh kept the Yales to 6–6 tie going into the third period, but then the New Haven team began pushing footballs across the enemy goal-line with regularity. A crowd of 10000 went home well-pleased with developments, and with some hope that. Pennsylvania would be knocked over in next Saturdays encounter here. Penn beat Harvard Saturday, 19 to ‘, and that didn’t make the Ellis any happier. Comeback The University of Connecticut eleven uncorked a 26 to victory over Massachusetts State for its first win of the season. The Storrs aggregation never was in danger and gained confidence for its big game with Wesleyan next week at the Connecticut field. Wesleyan, in the meantime, wasn’t faring so well. It lost its second game. in a row, losing to Bowdoin, 18 to 0. Trinity, also seeking it’s first vic- tory, lost to bates, 21 to 12. The Hartford team has an open date next week. The U. s. Coast Guard Academy eleven, powerful aggregation, trounced Worcester Tech. 40 to 0. Next week, the academy team plays Colby.
