Even.Stephen Battle Promised as Ellis, Middies Clash Tors’ Chances Seen Up To Improved Air Play; Knowlton Blues Hope ANNAPOLIS, MD, Oct. 10 An ticipating a crowd of $4,000 fans, Navy’s twice-beaten football squad hopes to give its best performance of the season against Yales Bulldogs tomorrow at the Baltimore Munich pal Stadium. The first of two games scheduled in the big Baltimore horseshoe this year, the contest figures to be an even-Stephen affair all the way. Yale should be rebounding from last weeks 35–6 lacing at the hands of a powerful Penn eleven, but Navy, in its own right, still smarts from an unexpected 100 setback meted out by Princetons Tigers. Tomorrow’s game marks the first appearance in this area of young Howie Odell, successor to Spike” Nelson, ousted as Eli coach last year. Upon Odells shoulders rests the problem of recapturing Yales erstwhile gridiron greatness and he’ll come to Baltimore intent on taking victory over Navy back to New Haven. Sixth Game of Series. The contest stretches the Navy Yale series to six games. After Yale beat the Sailors, $40, in 1901, the teams didn’t meet again until 1885. In 1885, 1896 and 1888 Yale conouered Navy, but only in ’36 could the Ellis fashion more than one touchdown in winning. They won by single point in 1885 and two tallies in 1888. When Navy, under 1t. Col. Emory E. (Swede) Larson, finally emerged with victory, the 1910 outfit did it 21–0. Navy’s erratic offense will be watched closely tomorrow. Comdr John E. Whelchel spent the entire past week driving his players through stiff scrimmages in an eff fort to improve Nays timing and coordination, which faltered so abruptly against Princeton. In Gordon Studer and Fullback Hills Hume, Whelchel has shown two smart-stepping ball-carrying threats, while Ben Martin, at wing back, isn’t far behind them. How ever. unless Hal Hamberg or Plebe Monty johnson comes through with flying colors. the middies won’t have an aerialist available to match Yale’s Hugh Knowlton. Against Lehigh and Penn Knowlton pitched four touchdown passes and naturally carries the bulk of Odell’s offensive hopes tomorrow. Injuries Riddle Lines. Both lines have been riddled by injuries, Yale announcing yesterday that Capt. Spence Moseley, center, and Tackle Steve Stack won’t be able to play. Nays Gene Goudie, regular left end since Jack Laboon was injured at the seasons outset, has been replaced this week by Al Channel, Whiae Guard Art Knox, sidelined for two weeks, still is a doubtful pos sibility. Navy Center Dick Fedon can be expected to have much to say about the middies’ success or failure against Yale. Dubbed the Com mando center” by his mates, Fedon thus far has been the sailors stand out llneman.

YALE PREPS FOR NAVY ENCOUNTER Game at Baltimore Satur- day; Elis Looked Bad; UcOnns Upset Yale university’s football team, battered and bruised in being over- whelmed by vastly-superior Penn team Saturday, began work today for the game with Navy this week. end at Baltimore. The Eli squad was bitterly dis appointed in it’s failure to make a better showing against the mighty Penn tide. The visitors rolled up something like 356 yards net in rushing, while Yale had a net gain of minus 32 yards, not good show ing. The final score of 35 to 6 clearly showed Penn,s superiority. The Ellis could do nothing with the hard- charging Penn backs, including Bert Stiff and Bob Odell, brother of Yale Coach Howie O’Dell and the Penn backs rolled up yardage almost at will The Yale line seemed irl- capable of holding the assault, ex- cept on few occasions. Stiff scored twice for Penn, and Bob Brundage, reserve ful!back, also tallied two times. Yales only score came at the start of the third period, when Odells tumble was recovered by Capt, Spense Moseley, and a quick forward pass from Penn’s 22-yard line gave the Ellis six points. It was the only real of- fensive gesture of the game for Yale. UcOnns Upset Elsewhere in Connecticut: Wesleyan Uniyersity’s eleven scored a major upset by defeating the University of Connecticut team, 20 to ‘. Connecticut was highly favored to take this one, but a sec- ond half Wesleyan rally was some thing the Connecticut boys could not stifle. Wesleyan meets Swarthmore at Middletown this week, and Connec- ticut tackles Maine at Orono. The U. s. Coast Guard academy eleven surged to its third straight victory, downing Colby, IA to 12. The academy team plays Norwich at New London this week end. Trinity, idle last Saturday, began heavy work today for the game with Worcester Tech at Worcester this week.
