SMITH STARS F0RG0pHER5; HUSkIE5 LOSE SEATTLE, Sept. 29. : Bruce Smith, prospective all American back for the University of Min nesota Gophers, passed, bucked and rammed his team to a 14–6 victory over the University of Washington Huskies Saturday af- ternoon in a game which saw the Gophers live up to all advance promises of their 1941 football prowess. Kept on the defensive most of the game, Coach Jimmy Phelan’s gridders had little chance to do any scoring. It was the fifth time in five years that the Gophers have conquered the western team in what is fast becoming a classic opener of the intersectional sea- son. Hefty linesmen on both teams bore the brunt of the punishment, with Smith sparkling outstanding ly for the visitors.
