A bit of typical Southwest daring midway the last period clinched a 27–19 victory for Hardin n-Simmons over Catholic University at Brook land Stadium yesterday as the Cow boys from Texas maintained their position among the Nations unbeaten, united teams. Leading by a single point and confronted with suddenly aggressive C. U. team which had all but overcome 2O-point deficit, the visitors put the game on ice with q spectacular play usually executed only by the pros or collegiate teams from their section of the land. Caught deep in their own terri tory by one of Charley Moutenots punts, the Texans scored at time and by the means least expected. For with c. U. anticipating the conventional running play from the visitors 12-yard line, Capt. Owen Goodnight faded back to his own goal line, tossed a long pass and realized complete satisfaction when L. B. Russell. another back, took it on the Cowboys 29-yard line to start a 71-ysrd sprint to the c. U. goal Russell’s Speed Gains Tally. The Cardinals sophomore end, Brenden Stynes, was within two steps of Russell when he caught the ball but the latter, one of the visit tors feetest backs, soon outran his pursuer and for the last 80 yards zig-zagged back and forth across the field in tantalizing fashion. 2Slssell’s run squelched all hopes of nearly 1000 c. U. homecoming fans for an upset victory, but the losing Cardinals have the satisfacton of knowing they provided the most spectacular local college game of the current season by their sec ond-half uprising. Because for a half, definitely they had been outclassed by the all victorious Cowboys who had driven So yards to their first touchdown, ridden the airlanes so yards to their second and scored on another pass Just before the second quarter ended. Then. starting with recovery Of a Hardin Simmons tumble at the outset of the second half, the Cardinails began to go places. Martin Donovan, an end, started c. US rally by falling on a loose ball on the visitors 20 and within two min utes the Cards had their first score. Hank Brostek and Moutenot, two hard-running backs all day, alter mated in advancing to the 6-yard line and a holding penalty against the Cowboys gave Catholic first down on the /. Halfback Al Norris went over in two plays. The same Norris set up G. us second scoring drive when he fell on blocked kick at midfeld. Again Moutenot and Brostek hit the Cow boys line for huge gains, the latter finding hole in the left side of his own forward wall to score standing
