NO GRID UPSETS DURING WEEK END Top-Heavy Scores Mark Vic tories OF Leaders In Every Section Of Country more attractive. because it is moro open and produces bigger scores. Y esterday the collegians launched a mass rebuttal the Ike of which never has been seen. An even dozen of the nations top ranking powers came through to victory by scoring a minimum Of three touchdowns each and WIN ming by a minimum margin of two On an afternoon remarkable for the lack of a single major upset, the scoring parade ranged all the way from the East. where Boston college swamped Idaho, 600, through the Midwest, where Notre Dame crushed Carnegie Tech, ol-0. to the Pacific coast, where Stan. ford trampled Washington State, 26–14. On the way it dipped down into the deep South for Tennessee 5 Pip conquest of Alabama and into the Southwest for Texas A. and MS 21–7 decision over Texas Christian. Nor were the most one-sided win ners necessarily out to make it look bad. Notre Danes Elmer Layden used 81 men, including several not even good enough to have been assigned numbers, while Boston colleges Frank Leahy, Carl Snavely of Cornell, which trimmed Syracuse, 1876, and Nebraska’s Biff Jones, whose Huskers routed Karsas, 53–2, also cleared the bench Of all available substitutes. Their clubs simply got rolling, and there was nothing that could stop them. Thus it was a day on which leadership claims yer 1e-ernpaasized rather than readjusted. Notre Dame, showing better bal ance than any team Layden has had, staked out its Claim to ma tional ranking by a wah3ping I’m expected only in the size of the final score. The Irish now should have clear sailing until the No: tn western game Nov. %. The Wildcats meanwhile took over first place in the Western conference by making it two straight Big Nine” triumphs in beating Wisconsin, PIT, will Bill de Core wont passing to n touchdown and turning the Badger end for so yards and another. Michigan, switching the heavy duty from Tommy Harmon to Bob Westfall, used the fullback’s 152 yards to good advantage in crushing ILL nois, $50, while Minnesota, with out throwing a pass all day, broke Bruce Smith loose for tn two touchdowns that beat OHIO State, 1877, and virtually closed the door on the defending champs. Nebraska’s Big Six title stock doomed tremendously in the rout of Kansas, gained with star back Herman Rohrig on the bench. Missouri,, with Harry Ice averaging u yards per try and going for three t%allies, trimmed Iowa State. 30.14, to hold the challenging spot. Eastern attention this week will be conferred on Ann Arbor, where Penn will play Michigan and on Ithaca, N. Y, where Ohio State will meet Cornell. OFF yesterdays results the fur is going to fly. Penn, getting set for All-American Harmon, laid the ground. work for a great man-to-man duel. The red and blues Francis Xavier Reagan, running for 200 yards and five touchdowns, passing for anotherr and refusing a substitute until he had attended to that fifth tally, was a one-man gang in Penn’s dizzy 1923 conquest of Princeton. Cornell meanwhile was putting together 534 yards of running ard passing gains against Syracuse, and appears well-primed to make it two straight over Ohio State. With Penn and Cornell dominating the Ivy league, Boston college and Fordham rule tn poison ivy’‘ circuit. B. c. rolled to nine touchdowns against Idaho. The Rams, boasting possibly the best backield in their history, turned three second-period breaks into as many touchdowns to trim Pitt, a. IL, after Jimmy Blumenstock’s 49, yard romp had tied the score in the first quarter. History repeated for Tennessee. The same Johnny Butler who stepped in for George Cafego to start the Vols moving against Ala bama a year ago filled in for Bob Foxx this time. He ran 60 yards, then passed II for e1e score, returned a punt 40 yards for another, and thus put the Southeastern conference leaders in front to stay. In the Southwest the Texas Aggies raced to three touchdowns in seven minutes against T. c. IT, with blocking back Jim Thomson stepping out of comparative OBJ security to snag two scoring aerials. For Stanford, still on top in the Coast conference, it was four touchdowns by as many backs that whipped Washington State. Wash ington meanwhile stayed close on the Indians heels with 4 1910 whip ping of Oregon State. Not too far behind these pace settlers are In the East-Columbia, 1918 win ner over Georgia as the Lions again featured sophomore P a ul
