New York, Oct. 15.-EaStern foot ball apparently has produced Amer icas No. 1 gridiron machine of the 1940 season ir Cornell. In two starts the awesome Big Red squad has scored total of 79 points against Colgate and Army and today ranks first in every system of rating col lege elevens. The Lambert Trophy Committee, conducting a week-by-week rating of teams in the Eastern sector nj competition for the annual Lambert Eastern Champion of the Year, this week moves Cornell into conn., plete dominance of the section. The magnificent Big Red club that bat tered Army into 45–0 submission is listed at .975, thirteen full points ahead of Boston College, which maintained its same standing of last week .962, off a free-scoring defeat of the Temple Owls. The Lambert Trophy point-rating system is intended as a handy guide in comparing the merits of Eastern college elevens. It is chart based on several factors-personnel, con- dition O. individual stars, tactical development past performance and present morale: The numbered ranking is not intended to be a per- centage table, but an index to de- termine the relative strength Of r1- valS. Tigers Out. The defeat suffered by Princeton against Navy last week dropped the husky Tigers from the select list ot Lambert Leaders, the group which outclasses ali Eastern opposition This weeks leaders are: Cornell, Boston College, Fordham, George town, Penn, Villanova, Navy and Pitt. However, Princeton’s setback was not alone responsible for it’s drop from seventh ranking Eastern team to twelfth. The narrow margin ot the victory over Vanderbilt, obvious weaknesses l.. the middle of the line and a lack of backfield speed make Princeton look less formidable than had been generally predicted Cornell’s elevation to absolute command O.: Eastern elevens is based on several things. The speed and precision of both the first ano second elevens wearing hte crimson jerseys, the versatility of attack both on the ground and in the air the solidness of the defense-al contribute to make the Ithaca clut one of the finest football teams 1T the galle,s history. This week thu Big Reds are heav- ily favored to defeat Syracuse, team which moved up by its one. sided conquest of N. Y. U., showing signs of being better knit than dur ing the rout by Northwestern or October 5th. However, four ol five touchdown margin is indicated in Cornell .975, against Syracus’ .9O9. In she Lambert Trophy rating every Is points is figured roughly tt represent the margin of a touch down.
