Tennessee, Cornell Wins Take Gridiron Limelight Neyland’s Team May. Stand Off All Comers; Big Red Faces Test In Ohio State hard-pressed picker who has to start forecasting football games before there’s any concrete evidence on hand, it’s encouraging today to study the results of two of yesterdays major games – Tennessee’s 1870 victory over Duke, and Cor nell’s $40 humping of Colgate. For the sake of future refer ehce, these we’re. the most notable scores returned from the custom airy consignment Of form-folloWing and form-upsetting gridiron bat ties. In the manner as much a the margin of their triumphs, Tennessee and Cornell showed they once again are ready to stand off all eomers-Major Bob highlands YER satile Volunteers quite r ossibly for the rest of the season, the big Red at least until the Oct. 26 meeting with Ohio State. Tennessee, paced chiefly by Bob Foxx, broke away from its Gus tomary conservative style of play to befuddle the Dukes on offense. On defense, the Vols threw up a barrier that kept tn Blue Devils on the wrong side of midfield all afternoon. Cornell, with 239 yards gained on passes, also got rolling in the style to which it became accustomed in winning the unofficial 1889 Eastern title. If: there was any individual star, it was Hal Mccullough, who threw. two scoring passes and set up another. But. as usual with the Ithacans, credit had to bt spread over a vast array of able backs and linemen. With aggressive little Franklin and Marshall’s 1921 sleeper” over Dartmouth as the one major upset Ito all but the Diplomats, who had been predicting something on that order for weeks, there had to be other revisions of preseason estimates all along the line. Northwestern, beautifully drilled and with a truckload of fine backs. showed itself into the Big Ten pic ture by handing Syracuse an I’m merciful 400 shellacking. The Or ange looked so helpless there may be no real line on Northwestern until next Saturdays game with Ohio State-but you can’t 60 far wrong with a pair Of ball-toters like Bill DeCorrevcnt and D o n Clawson. The preseason Big Ten co-favorites-Ohio State, Michigan and Minnesota-did little to hurt their notices., though the Buckeyes did have to call on Charley Mag for a last-minute field goal to shade Purdue, IVA, in the conference opener. Michigan turned Tom Har. mon loose for all its .nts in beat ing Michigan State, 21–14, as Bob Westfall gave Harmon nice sup port. Minnesota, teaming S o h Bill Daley with veteran George Franck, madegit two straight ma jor wins by a 1877 conquest Of Ne braska. Cornell’s pre-eminent position In the East was helped along by sev eral developments, including the 20–19 close call Army, next on the Cornell slate, had with Williams; the 7–6 scare Vanderbilt threw into Princeton; -Yale’s 1914 defeat by more resourceful Virginia; the un impressive showings made by Fordham, Navy, Columbia d Harvard against West Virginia. Cincinnati. Maine I’D Amherst, respectively, and the $50 licking which Louisiana State plastered on Holy Cross. Complaining the Southeastern and Pacific coast races were ex’ pected comebacks which failed to pan out. Tulane continued to make mistakes and again found them costly in bowling to Auburn, 20–4l, and Southern California, for once over-matched in manpower, was fought to it’s second straight tie Oy OTeSOu OtdLc LII d U-V tilIlllcI mo paradox here) in which each side got is first downs. CALIFORNIA; rebound SO conquest of St. Mary’s added more to the Coast muddle. There was ample justification for the prediction that. the Southwest race will be wide-open. The Texas Aggies looked their all-conquering 1899 selves in whipping Tulsa, >4l-6. with six touchdowns by as many men. But Texas Christian ept step with a coo cor against Arkansas in the first league game; Southern Methodist mixed passes and run, ming plays smartly to confound North Texas Teachers, 20–7; JACK Grains rabbit runs and booming punts helped Texas to a 1876 score against Indiana, and sophomores were standouts for Rice, $50 win ner over Centenary. l S0ftbnU Officials tn
