Mary’s outfit to win. 1910. A preseason Maryland-Mount ST Marys practice scrimmage was an accessory before the fact because it was the inaccurate gauge by which the EmmitSburg squad was measured and found wanting in everything but the old college try. Of that work. out G.. w. figured to win from here to there. but for two periods the Mount was as unyielding as the rock Of its native Blue Ridge hills and for two more 1t was as annoying as II small boys toting b. b. guns. The G. WIS had read Of feeble, class B team at the Mount and were prepared to deal eloquently with same but when Coach Jim Draper sent a silky. smart and aggressive machine into action it changed the battles entire complexion. Instead of the customary opening game rout it developed into a struggle OF mid season proportions with the Colon ials obliged to muster all their strength for the touchdown drives. The visitors produced a smart hard-to-catch ball carrier and kicker in Bill Boyle who chalked up the longest gains Of the evening Is. II and 10 yards. The Buff couldn’t remember reading about Bowie in the Maryland scrimmage and figured he must have been a sleeper but when the entire visiting team began to click G. w. decided the Terps must have met another team. Frank De Bottis. Jim Ellis and Pat Rogan performed brilliantly in the line and largely were responsible for stalling the Colonials in the first half. Bill Reinhart. G. w coach, delivered a fiery Grafton between halves and the effect of his unvarnished words was noticeable immediately after the second period got So was a chunky. light ming fast back by the name Of Ken Batson who put the 60 in both goal ward marches. BatSon. with lift from Walt Fedora here and there, led his mates 50 yards to their first score with a bewildering series OF line smashes and end runs starting with a 21-yard gallop to the visitors 2l-yard line. Fedora got the first touchdown but Batson took the ball over the second time. eliminating a 65-yard march with a wide sweep to the left on which he was forced to outrun his own interference as we’ll as the Mounts secondary defense. While the score is nothing to write home about and George Washington was slow in getting started don’t sell the Colonials short Ed Robins, the new right tackle: Frank August. replacing Bob Nowaskey at left end; Mike Monchlovich, center: Eddie and Tim Grady are few of those who did all right and who undoubtedly will improve as the season progresses. The game did the squad more good than harm and Reinhart was more. than willing to settle for two touchdowns If 1t taught his men a lesson.
