6. W. Displays Signs OF Genuine Class in Beating Jaspers Team Hasn’t Hit Stride, Declares Coach After 2l-to-18 Triumph NEW YORK. Oct. 5-Catalogue the Colonials as club worth watching for George Washington’s football team impresses as an outfit in the process of shifting into high gear, perhaps a game or two away from its peak but rolling in the right direction. In its hectic 21–18 victory over Manhattan last night at the Polo Grounds, G. w. demonstrated its passing and pass defense require light busting, but on the other side of the ledger the Colonials can dis play so many encouraging items that Coach Bill Reinhart isn’t in clined to fret. We haven’t hit our stride yet” says Stout William, but I’m salts fed. The boys still aren’t in top condition, but we’ll be in good physical shape in another week or so. We have long, tough season and I wanted them to play them selves into form and avoid hitting their peak too early. This clue has courage. It’ll bat tie and stick in the ball game when the breaks 60 against it. You have to like that” Score Twice in Five Seconds. The Colonials didn’t appear remotely related to the team which last week was extended to spank Mount ST. Mary’s, 1910. G. w. had a punch and its superiority over Manhattan was more marked than the score would indicate. After driving 81 and 81 yards for touchdowns to compile a 14–0 lead by half time, the Colonials we’re victims of wholesale penalties and bad breaks in the second half, Man haitian scrapplng back to reduce @. WIS margin to 14–12 Then, in the final five seconds of action, came fireworks from both teams. Needing three yards for first down as the clock licked the game precariously close to oblivion. G. w. gambled on a fourth down off-tackle thrust and was rewarded with touchdown, Walt Fedora streaking So yards to score. Dan Snyder converted for the third time in the engagement and G. w. owned a 21–12 lead with one second Of play remaining. The Jaspers made the most of that f1eeting second. for John Supulski took Mike Monchlovichs kick of, whipped the ball into Ted Ma zur’s paws on reverse and Mazur streaked 70 vars to score Clouding that touchdown was the fact it was scored in virtual darkness. the lights having been dimmed after G. w. produced its final touch down. .... Penalties Hurt CoIonials. Ken Baton sent the Colonials in front in the first period, slicing off right tackle for % yards to score, while Fedora plunged over from the 1-yard line in the second period to climax 67-yard march and boost G. w. into a 14–0 lead. Successive holding penalties put G. w. back to its own 5-yard line early in the third period and Man haitian capitalized on BatsonS poor punt out to the 81. Four plays later Supulski whipped a 9-yard touch down pass to Mazur. The Jaspers drove 81 yards for their next score. set up when Frank Gnup intercepted Eddie Wilamoskis pass midway in the fourth quarter. Dave Farabaugh scored from the 2-yard line on an end around play after a 5-yard penalty had moved the ball close to the G. w. goal. Then came those two touchdowns in the final five seconds, which must have established some sort of record. Monchlovich.
