New Orleans, Oct 0.-(NNS)- The South, which this year has caused more hubhub in the North since StoneWall’ jackson routed the Yankees at Bull Run, sends onlv one of its ace elevens out against an interSectonal foe of importance this week, but the football spotlight of the nation will be focused on Dixie again. The first sweep Of the calcium lamp Will rest on Knoxville, Tenn, where 10000 fans will see the Ten nessee Vols and Alabama Crimson Tide in a game which may lead not only to the Southeastern Conference championship but the national title as we’ll and q bid to a New Years day bowl. And way down here in Newer Leens’ Tulane’s powerful Green Wave plays host to the versatile North Carolina Tar Heels. All four of these elevens are I’M beaten, and, with once-beaten Duke and Clemson are rated the best teams from Chesapeake Bay to Old Man River. And, at this writing, all four are potential bidders for the national crown. The Tennessee–Alabama game should be an epic tussle. Bob Seylands Vols, after taking North Carolima State in its opening game, loaf ed against SeWanee and Saturday defeated Chattanooga, % to O, so Tennessee is fresh for the Tide. But whether playing three more or less sOfties will have the Vols up to a bitter struggle against ‘Bama remains to be SEEN Tennessee Favored Alabama, on the other hand, open ed with Howard, which gave it trouble, holding the Tide scoreless during the first half. And then ‘Bama went up to New York and nosed out Fordham, to g. That was followed by 20 to 0 airing against Mercer. 1t seems to us that ‘Bama is more ready for tough game than are the Walls, but the Tide must halt one Of the finest and most reSOurceful back filedS in America in George Cafego, Lenny COffman, Box FoXX and Sam Bartholomew. Tennessee will probably rule ia vorite over the Tide, but we’re look ing for Frank Thomas to come up with a close victory-perhaps by the margin Of a field goal by Sandy San ford 1t may be a defensive dog fight all the way, but we’re looking for scoring by both teams with the Tide winning by the silly looking score of 16 to 13. Tulane which ran up 800 yards against Fordham in beating them, Z to 0, without throwing single for ward pass, had an overwhelming victory in its grasp Saturday, but the Rams put on three magnificent goal | line stands to keep the score down. That show Of power points to victory over Cardinals Tar Heels, who snatched IA to 7 game out OF the fire in the fourth quarter against | New York University Saturday. But Tulane will go up against one Of the most versatile Offensives in the land this week. And the Greenies may have to score three touchdOWns to win the ball game. Watch Duke In Stirnweiss and Lalanne, the Tar Heels have two fine passersprobably the best the Greenies will face all year-and their tricky double wing attack may test the Greenies’ powerful lines-both Of ‘em-which held Clemson, Auburn and Fordham to a total Of $50 net on ground Incidently, all-American pickers should start checking up on the right side Of Tulane’s No. l line where 212-pound Ralph Wenzel ca vorts at end, 235-pound Harley Nc Collum tears ‘em up at tackle and 209-pound Tom O’Boyle rips at guard We’re picking the Greenies to beat North Carolina but only after thrilling tussle, 20 to IA, with both Carolina scores coming through the air. Duke, which lost, IA to IS, to Pitts
