Duke Picked To Defeat Colgate’s Red Raiders had taken, rode to sudden victory on the passes and dashes Of doc Plucllet, 160-pounder, who scored the first touchdown and passed to Row Higgins for the other in the last seven seconds Of the game. That victory sent Vandy’s stock booming again and put them in fine frame Of mind to face Ken tuckv’s surprising Wildcats, who also did us dirt by ‘shu-ing’ off Paul Shu and the V. M. |. Cadets, d to 0. Their game this week should be a tussle, but Vandy Is picked by the margin Of field goal 10 to 7. Tulane and Auburn, who have been giving a Southern version OF the Pitt-Fordham series, will be shooting to smash three conseucutive scoreless ties. And Tulane Will be trying to score for the first time since the 1884 Auburn clash. Tulane Impressive Both had trouble winning then Iopening games, but Tulane’s 7 to 6 win over Clemson was much more impressive than Auburn’s to I triump.. c.~. ..’li:ls Southern. Tulane. forecast to oVerpOWer Clemson by three touchdOWns, made enough yards to do it, but IumDles and penalties halted four greene drives. The Green Wave piled up 326 wards rushing the ball to 50 for Glenn son and $50 to 1l9 when the pass gains are added But Banks McFadden’s mighty quick-kicking and pass inc and the Tulane errors, mechanlcal and statutory, forced the Greenles 10 come from behind to win out by the margin of “Jitterbug’ Kellogg S kick after he had bucked over for the tying touchdown. Red” Dawson’s boys are picked to take Auburn, “a to 7, for tough as the Plainsmen have been, the Greenie’s power should be brought to higher degree Of effectiveness with a game like the Clemson clash under their belts. The Tulane-Auburn tilt is an important South eastern conference game. Louisiana State, favored to down Ole Miss and get revenge for the 20 to 7 drubbing handed them by the Rebels last year, once again opened its season by being virtually eliminated from the Southeastern title scramble AS last year, tho Tigers made the yardage, but Ole Miss won the ball game. ‘Bama Backs Capable ! The Rebels, outgained 300 yards to SO, grabbed IA to 0 lead in the third period and hung on for dear life to win, ii to 7, despite Tiger ! threats to the bitter end. The defeat won’t help L. S. U. in 4 it’s invasion of Worcester, Mass, thf1 week to play Holy Cross powerful Crusaders, rated with Fordham and 4 Carnegie Tech as the East’s strong est. True, the Tiger Sophs will have benefited by the torrid Old Miss battle. but Holy Co. LIQUID win handily, say about 20 to 0. The ady’s most important intersectional battle, however, will be Alabama’s attempt to throttle the Fordham Rams in New York. Look for terrific fight. ‘Bama is big and has two sweet climax runners in Nelson and Pappais tc match Fordham’s Eshmont anc Blumenstock and Frank Thomas can really get a team ready for { big early season clash, as witness what he did Southern CALIFORNIA; Rose BoWlers last year. However here’s a to guess for Fordham but we won’t be surprised with tic game, perhaps scoreless. Georgia Tech goes up agains Notre Dame in the Yellow Jackets first game Of the season. Bill Alex ander is a demon at prepping { club for any given game and that’s why Tech should be tough for the Irish. But in the end, too much artillery will win the battle Ar Elmer Layden is the guy with the biggest and most deadly guns Oul guess: Notre Dame 10, Georgia Tech 0. “Ole Mi Has Power Mississippi tie, which swafnpeo Howard by “a points more thar Alabama did, and then went out and knovked off a favored Arkansas eleven, 10 to 0, takes on Florida

Atchison for example, can rest assured of a brusing battle with Clemson, which held Tulane to a 7–6 score, while Georgetown could find little consolaton in New York Universitys crush ing 7–6 upset of Colgate. Not only did the Violets outpoint Andy Kerr’s Red Raiders, but almost wrecked the team with their vicious play. Several Colgate regulars were rendered hors de combat early in the first period, Fullback Hoague suffera mild conclusion. Tulsa, st. Anselm’s, st. Josephs, Detroit and Long Island, appearing on Catholic us schedule, won handily, and in most instances by at least three touchdowns. Georgetown and George Washing ton were little startled by West Virginia’s 44–0 triumph over West Virginia Wesleyan. Bill Reinhart and Jack Hagerty have said all along the Mountaineers would be strong, but not that strong. West Virginia plays Pitt this week, and both teams will have scouts in the stands. A couple of Maryland’s opponents took it on the chin when v. NJ. L. bowed to Kentucky and Western Maryland lost to Cortland Teach ers, but Rutgers knocked off Wesleyan, and with Syracuse, Penn State and Florida on the program not forgetting Virginia-the Terps needn’t worry about opposition.
