Virginia twice missed extra points from placement, but Maryland was offside both times and the alert Beveridge skirted left end for the point on the third attempt Again taking to the air, Maryland gobbled up 81 yards in two plays for a touchdown late in the second period. Backed to their own 13-yard line by Gillette’s punt, Maryland quickly al tered the situation. Rip Hewitt, who replaced Weidinger, fired a pass to Joe Murphy for 81 yards and duplicated that on the following play, with Murphy catching the ball on Virginia’s 35-yard line, wiggling out of Harry Dinwiddie’s grasp on tele 81 and outfooting Gillette to the goal. The pass and run covered 66 yards. Widener again missed the placement. Terapins Surprise Enemy. Astonished by Maryland’s sudden at tack, but not to point of weakening, Virginia fought back again, driving steadily to Maryland’s 1O-yard line through the running of Mosby Car dozo, Gillette and Dinwiddie. The 75yard march was climaXed when Din widdie heaved a crisp pass to Sargeant in the end zone and the latter 6dded the extra point from placement. Virginia pieced timely quick-kick by Gillette and a 15-yard penalty against Maryland for clipping to in crease that lead midway of the third period. Backed to its 1-yard line by that combination, Maryland was in danger when Beveridge returned Murphy’s punt 1 yards to the Terp 26.
