YALE PREPS FOR MORE TROUBLE Michigan, Dartmouth Next in BOWl-State Loses First Game 1870 Invigorated by an unexpected triumph over navy, the Yale University football team opened preparalions today for forthcoming clashes with two Of the nations outstanding collegiate elevens. And there was not too much Joy in the Eli camp. The Yale eleven plays host to Fritz Crisler’s Michigan team Saturday, and then, a week later, opens the bowl to the Dartmouth Indians. icMhigan was strong enough to hold Minnesota to a 7–6 victory, while Dartmouth wait ed a reasonable period and then throttled Brown 34–13. The Ellis, nevertheless, shouted their heads of about the 81 sinking of the Navy Saturday. They shouted the praises of Gil Humphrey, who passed to Bill Snavely for a touch down, and then, to make the after noon his, booted field goal in the final- period to provide the Eli mar gin Of victory. Approximately $1,000 spectators viewed the startling proceedings. Navy entered the fray the favorite. and for about flve-eights Of the game dominated the play. Then the Bulldog, already defeated twice, decided things had gone far enough, and produced a final quarter rally which netted points and victory the first of the year. First Loss Connecticut’s only undefeated col lege eleven bit the dust Saturday when Connecticut State invaded Orono to play Maine and came home on the zero end of a 1870 score. States line play was lamentably weak in the. contest, and the back field never was able to move into threatening position for score. Wesleyan returned with an unexpected TO victory over Haverford. Johnny Kay produced the only tally when he received a punt in the third period and raced unframed 70 yards to touchdown. Phelps place kicked the extra point. Trinity played Hobart to 6–6 tie. The Hobart team scored before either side could get its fingers warm, and from then on, was kept in chancery by a fighting Hartford team. Harriss scored the Trinity touchdown in the third period. The U. S. Coast Guard Academy provided somewhat of a surprise by defeating Norwich University, 1870, for its first victory of the year. Bates trounced Arnold 1862 to complete Connecticuts football al endar for the day.

CUP)-I will gladly furnish the use Of my living room, also some suitable punch and sandwiches, if any of you would care to join me in an informal discussion of that football problem child, the try for point after touchdown. l will serve as chairman OF the meeting, not only because / am neutral on the subject and know the rudiments of parliamentary proceed ure. but because being chairman would allow ne to rise to a point of disorder whenever l liked and serve another slug CT punch. Certainly there is need for dis cussion concerning the try for the extra point. 1t causes too many heartaches, costs too many jobs and brings about 100 much controyersy each fall to be ignored. The tremendously important part it plays in a great sport is evident to everyone who reads the scores of the games each Saturday. Not a week goes by without a dozen or more important games being won or lost by the extra point. Minnesota’s 7 to 6 victory over Michigan in the battle for the Lit the Brown jug” was Saturdays standout example. George Faust, Minnesota quarterback, kicked the extra point and Dan Smick, Michigan end, didn’t. Those who dislike the extra point, and urge its discontinuance, prob ably will employ the statistics of this game in their argument in the meeting at my house. But for the sake Of a few Of our loya Minnesota fans let US turn back the pages of football just a few years. In 1926, for instance, statistics favored Minnesota all through the game, YET Michigan won. Now, if our memory serves US right we believe it was Benny Oosterbaan who picked up Minnesota tumble and ran for touchdown. Benny Friedman’s won the game 7 to 6. In 1880 and 1881, one quick thrust, punt return, and off-tackle run of fifty-siz yards, hurled back Minnesota who haC out-played Michigan. All loyal fans remember that memorial Saturday after noon in 1882 when little Harry Neuman’s field goal beat the Gophers to 0.
