H0yAS, TERRAP|NS, CARDS BEAR DOWN G. u, in Only Other Game Here, Warned Against Hampden.S n.Sydney. Two halfbacks who don’t weigh as much as the average high school player are being counted upon by Coach Bill Reinhart to get George Washington off to a good start tomorrow night as the Colonials usher in the college football season here against Furman at Griffith Stadium. Neither of them are exactly strangers. as Vic Sampson was G. W.’s isading back last year and Billy Rich ardson’s name was by-Word with local high school fans three and four years ago This is supposed to be Richardson’s big year in the college game as hitherto he has been handicapped by minor injuries which may have kept him from being the sensaton for G. w. he was for Central Although Sampson and Richardson were expected to alternate in the Colonial backfield, Reinhart said today that both may start. Although they are about the same height Sampson is slender, depending upon shiftiness, while Richardson uses his stocky build to best advantage at crashing the line. Reinhart in Quandary. The other problem that Reinhart definitely had to settle today was the composition Of the remainder Of his backfield. Biff Borden and Frank Merka are veteran backs, but a sophomore fullback named Lud Urick has Joined three other sophs-Fred Sartore. Tom Grady and Ken Batsonas eligible starters. Because Grady is the tallest of the lot and because he expects Furman to unlash passing attack, Reinhart, with an eye cooked toward the best pass defense, may pick Grady. George Washington was not the only squad exceptionally busy today as Georgetown and Catholic University also were preparing for opening games while Maryland was working hard in q desperate effort to avert a second consecutive defeat. Only one of these three schools will play in town, however. Georgetown tackles Hampden-S Sydney at Griffith Stadium on Saturday, but Maryland invades Penn State and c. U. travels to Olean, N. Y, for a Sunday game with st. Bonaventure. Three Tigers Feared. According to Line Coach George Murtagh. Georgetown will be up against trio of clever gridmen in the Tiger lineup. While the whole Hampden-Sydney team played we’ll only to lose 7–6 decision to Washington & Lee last week, Murtagh brought back special warnings of its captain. Al Buchinsky, who plays end; sgd Wal chen, halfback, and Will Craft, 200 pound tackle. It should provide an interesting afternoon for Georgetowns youngsters, six Of whose starters will be sophomores c. U. has gone in for secret practice In preparation for st. Bonaventure. Whether the Cards may have heard that some alumni of the New York College are in town. the fact remains that fences around the Brookland stadium were covered with huge canvas today and the gates barred to all visitors. dinals hard in an effort to develop an attack to meet the Saints defense, which three times stopped Manhattan in goal-line stands last week. 1t looks as If c. U. would depend chiefly upon an aerial attack, as Burke Vidnovic’s passes have dominated all preparatory work. Murphy Is Terps’ General. 1t now seems certain that Joe Muir ply, 15l-pound quarterback, will start for Maryland against Penn State at State College Saturday, as the injured Charlie Weidinger, veteran pass expert and general, has not had on a grid suit all week. Except that he is more than Is pounds lighter and is not such an adept passer as Weidinger Murphy fills the role well. He is better than an average passer, fine punter and an exceptional runner with the ball. His great speed makes him extremely valuable, as he has run the 100 in competition in 0:99. Coach Frank Dobson still is undecided as to his end Frank Black, Frank Dwyer and Leo Mueller, all rockies, have shared the jobs on the first team in all the drills this week, with the denoted Nick Budkoff and Francis Beamer trying to fight their way back from the second eleven. Otherwise the Terps doubtless will start the same men against the Nittany Lions who began the tilt against Rich
