RICE TAKESTOA|R, .CL|PSAUBURN, 13–7 Passes by Lain Push ‘Bama Poly From Undefeated Gridiron Ranks. BY the Associated PFesS. Y CUSTOM, Tex, Oct. 30.-Big Ernie Lain, a pass-slinging sophomore, tossed two touch Il L down heaves today to give Rice Institute 1877 triumph over previously undefeated Auburn. The victory was the second of the season for the Rice team. The Texans outplayed the Ala bamans in the first half, but in the third quarter Auburn unleashed two substitute backs, Kenmore and Sitz. 1t was Kenmore’s passing and Sitz’ running that carried the Alabamans from their own % to a touchdown, after Auburn had made but one first down in the first half. Blow to Auburn Coach. THE defeat was particularly disap- pointing to Jack Meagher, Auburn coach, who left Rice at the end of an unsuccessful 1888 season. Rice scored in the first quarter when Lain pitched 22-yard pass over the goal line to Frank Steen, Rice end. In the second quarter, Dan Coffee, fast Rice back, sprinted 80 yards on a punt return and put the ball on the Auburn II, where Lain faded back and passed yards to Meagher, who ran over the goal line standing up. In the third Sitz punched the Rice line full of holes and scored from the 6-yard line straight over tackle.
