LICKING MARYLAND. TON|CFOR VIRGINIA Coach Dawson Believes Win viii Spur Cavaliers to Greater Success. Special Dispatch to The Star. r UNIVERSITY, Va, November FIRED Dawson, head ~ coach of foot ball at Vir- ginia, believes that the vic tory of the Cavaliers over Mary land last week will give his charges the tonic they need for the hard games ahead against Washington and Lee, v. P. I. and North Carolina. He is optimistic in spite of the loss of Virginia’s ace halfback, Harry Mar tin, who was injured Saturday night in an automobile accident near Harrison burg and is lost to the squad for, the remainder of the season. Virginia lost four games In a row before winning from Maryland, 6 to o. Columbia, Navy and “. NJ. /. all defeated the Cavaliers In the last quarter. For time Saturday it looked as though the Old Liners were going to do the same thing before they were checked O&A tA4C St~y6A4 AAAkC G4SCA q ~ drive. Cavalier line play against Maryland came in for especial praise. The Virginia forwards so completely smothered the running attack OF the visitors that they lost five yards more than they were able to gain through the line all afternoon. Butch Slaughter, virginia’s forward coach, who watched w. and L. and v. p. I. play to a TT tie. has told his charges that the line of the Generals is as powerful as any they have faced all Fall except Ohio State. And he adds that the Gobblers are little, If any, weaker from end to end. Virginia probably will start against w. and L. with the same line that played Maryland-John Legs and Ken Morton on the ends, Capt. Ray Burger and George Coles in the tackles. John Dial and Horace Hallett as guards, and Gene Wager playing center.
