VIRGINIA SPIRIT HIGH DESPITE | D SSE 8 UNIVERSITY, Va, Nov. IA. Virginia’s football m en- have started preparations for the v. P. I. game here next Saturday with the spirit Of an undefeated team, not Of one that has gained only two victories in eight games played. The Cavaliers are not down hearted, because they know that although they have been outScored by Navy, v. M. I. and w. and L. in three Of their last four games, they have not been outplayed. They are, in fact, aware Of the irony in the situation. For they realize that their poorest play in six weeks was against Maryland, and then won that game 6 to 0. Statistics Of the Washington and Lee game show Virginia’s superiority clearly. There were 146 plays run off, excluding kick-offs and plays called back by penal ties. OF these 81 were run in the half of the field defended by the Generals, So in Virginia’s half. The Cavaliers ran 80 plays, 33 in their own territory, 40 in the Generals. w. and L. had the ball for 64 plays, of which As were in their end of the gridiron, and only 10 in the end toward Virginia’s goal. In their first two drives at the opening Of the game the Generals had the ball close to Virginia’s goal for Is plays, but during the other three quarters, were across the midline for only four plays. One long and brilliant run by Joe Sawyers wrecked the Cavaler hopes just as did Red Baum. berger’S sprint at Navy and the two spectacular daShes Of Cliff Montgomery at Columbia. With Harry Martin out of the game the VirginianS had no one to shake loose.
