80u 3 ufbC ueleab TUT uOiy VT McEwan, who established a re- markable record as coach of Army teams at West Point and later coached at Oregon, will have no hand fn directing the Crusaders as they face three major games. Destinies of the eleven will be guided by Arthur A. Bunny Cor coran, end coach, and Gus Cervini, line coach, assisted probably by Cleo o’Donnell, graduate manager of athletics, who was head coach before McEwan came to Worcester in 1890. The Rev T. J. Phelan, s. J.. fac- ulty moderator of athletics, an- nounced McEwap’s suspension last night, shortly after McEwan had tried to discharge Trainer Sullivan, trainer of the football team and track coach at Holy Cross for 20 years. Who’s Boss? Father Phelan’s notice to Me- Ewan explained he was being sus- pended until further notice” be- cause he had attempted to dis charge one of the schools staff without authorization. The notice made no mention of McEWan’s contract, reported to be for three years. Differences between coach and trainer came to 6 head Saturday 1n Providence during the Brown game. Sullivan made repeated trips onto the field at McEwan’s orders to care for players. One of these trips was made after Brown had driven to within four yards of the Holy Cross goal stripe. when Sullivan came onto the field, necessitating time out, Brown was on its fourth down, and a penalty was called giving Brown its first down which resulted In a touchdown and the Bruins 10–7 victory. Holy Cross, the year be- fore, had beaten Brown 32-O. McEwan claimed that after this penalty Sullivan refused to go onto the field again, although the coach believed player needed attention. The argument became heated on the bench, attracted the attention of many spectators. and was con- tinued on the dressing room after the game. Last night McEwan an- take Sullivan’s place. And Besides Another source of friction, 1t IS understood, was McEwan’s reln- tions with o’Donnell, graduate manager of athletics. When the coach left Oregon in 1929 after q dispute with Oregon’s faculty, his services were obtained through the efforts of the Holy Cross Alumni association and not through the athletic association of which o. Donnell was director. This fact was reported to have disturbed mem bers of the athletic department. McEwan and O’Donnell were re- ported to have been at loggerheads over Reggie Brown, former Har- yard scout and Brown and Boston university coach. McEwa1 want ed Brown as scout, but O’Donnell felt that 1t might upset good will between Holy Cross and its op- ponents. In his me6sage notifying Me- Evan of hfs suspension, Father PheIan enclosed memorandum from the Rev John M. Fox. s. J., president of the college, which authorized him to “settle definitely the disturbance” and recommend immediate suspension of Coach McEwan. Will He Resign? This disciplinary action,” the memorandum said, should remain in efefct until Captain McEwan has made full amends in your ‘judg- ment for his amazing seizure of authority” The remaining games on the Holy Cross schedule arc among the Purple’s most important. The Crusaders meet Harvard Saturday. and Manhattan and Boston College follow. The latter is the big game of the Holy Cross season because of traditional rivalry.
