overwhelming VlClOI III lllt IWo games already played, while the > latter won overwhelmingly in its opener and Saturday surprised the gridiron world by toppling the University Of Georgia. : Alabama is to meet George Washing ton and v. P. l. to play Maryland. And, II one should ask, both the local schools will be on the short end of the odds. If George Washington is to get away with the long end of the score against the Crimson Tide it will have to be a whole lot stronger than any George Washington team ever has been. And, as far as Maryland against v. P. !. is concerned, no other conclusion can be drawn than that the Old Liners are up against 1t in meeting an eleven strong enough to beat Georgia A LABAMA for several years has had “A great teams. Under Wallace Wade it really started its brilliant grid iron efforts. but under Frank Thomas has continued. In its game Saturday Alabama swamped Mississippi State College 53 to 0. indicating that its present eleven should measure we’ll up to the best that Wade turned out, with the exception of one season. In Cain, Alabama has probably the greatest full back in the country, and while the other members Of the team hardly can be eXpected to equal Gains achievements, they nevertheless are among the best in the South Alabama is well coached in the so-called Notre Dame system Of play. NIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INsTI- TUTE always has been noted for its excellent material and whether or not 1t has turned out good teams has depended on the quality of its coaching. This year Monk Younger for several years at Davidson. took charge under Henry Redd,. who for nine years has developed brilliantA freshman elevens. and it was freely predicted that he would have great team. Younger won his first game easily then went down to Georgia with every body expecting him to get wiped off the map. However, people apparently : reckoned without knowing the caliber of : the v. P. I. squad and without taking into account Youngers ability as a coach. The traditional V. P. l. mate. rial and Youngers good coaching did the trick. F.. George Washington and Maryland have their work cut out for them, if they are to do as well as they would like. The Colonials have a veteran eleven one that has been pointing for two weeks especially for this game, but even with all their reputed strength they probably will enter the game on the short end OF strong odds. Mary lands task is rendered doubly hard bys the fact that il is green and that it has not been defeated by v. P. I. since 1928 Maryland also will enter its contest with the4ssenemy rated much the stronger. In games last week George Washing ton eaSily~defeated Westminster Col lege, while Maryland lost to Virginia by l point. The Colonials kept most of their stuff under cover, yet demonStrated real power. Maryland, against Virginia’s veterans, lost by the narroweSt of margins because of its inexperience when it apparently had victory in its grasp. Both George Washington and Maryland apparently are strong enough to play good games, even against pow erful opponents. IF Saturdays scores may be taken as i criterion, Maryland certainly has picked three tartarS from among Southern Conference eleveas. This week it meets v. P. l.. victor over Georgia. and the following week faces Duke University, which defeated Virginia Military Institute by 40 to 0. Then ;, three weeks later it entertains here Vanderbilt which administered a nice { spanking to North Carolina by 80 to II. the worst defeat any North Caro- :: lima eleven has had in many long day However. the Old Liners have the satisfaction of knowing that they have team that should improve consider ably as the season advances. Against Virginia, they did everything well enough to win, except the things that probably only experience gives. For instance. with only 4 minutes left to play and leading to in the fourth quarter, Maryland lined up to punt on its own 25-yard line. Probably not SO persons in the crowd of seven or eight thousand had much idea that Virginia could win but the unusual took place. Maryland lined up to punt on third down. The pass was bad and the punter had virtually to pick the ball up off the ground. Instead OF trying to run with it and downing 1t. to gain the opportunity to punt on the fourth down, an attempt was made to punt, with the result that the ball struck mass of Virginia linemen and rolled 10 yards and then was recovered by Vlr- gain put Virginia on the 8-yard line, where Maryland suffered a 5-yard penalty that put the ball on the 3-yard line On the next play Virginia was thrown for 2 or yard loss, but on the next occurred what apparently was a tumble, hut which probably was trick play as old as foot ball. The Virginia back was struck before he reached the line Of scrimnage, but the ball shot AL, 10 orx-lo v,Flfc line across the goal line where wager and a couple of other Virginia linemen were waiting for it. Wager fell on it for a touchdown. 1t probably was an intentional tumble across the goal line, with Virginia hnemen coached to be there ready to pounce on the ball. Such a combination of circumstances prob ably would not happen more than once in a lifetime and then only In the case of an inexperienced eleven. VIIRGINIA has much better foot v ball team than any other it has turned out in recent years. Before the season ends it will miss good deal Thomas. last years star, but with fine line and backfeld that IS better than it is being given credit for being, the Cavaliers ought to round out their best season in long while. GEORGETOWN and Catholic University ACCOMPLISHED what was expected OF them in their opening games, and what they themselves expected to do. The former took Mount st. Mary’s over the Jumps without much difficulty and the latter not only took City College OF New York over the jumps, but also left it stranded in couple Of water hazards. Both the Blue and Gray and Cardinals gave plenty of evidence that they will have to be reckoned with even by the best OF their opponents. vale did mt SDpnd a very ENJOYABLE
