Hoosier grid teams supplied the nation with thrills Saturday, part of them expected and one car rying all the genuineness of the story book upset Notre Dame today was a bit nearer a second consecutive national title by merit of its 14–0 victory over Northwestern. Within the Hoosier state, however, the TO victory of Indiana over Purdue was something to use as a hangover for the season. Somehow or other it appeared that Northwestern backs got the Buck” as they were called upon to crash for those few final yards and touchdowns. Carideo’s punting was nasterful. 1t showed to real advantage in the third period when the Irish began to reveal superiority. Their block ing was better, they passed for some first downs and with Carideo punt ing out of bounds on the Wildcat l., 2, and up to the 10-yard mark time and again there was nothing in the way of offense for the conference champions to do but punt back. Aided by a holding penalty in the last quarter on the Wildcats the Irish took the ball on the 28-yard line and Schwart wiggled and dashed to goal. That was a starter. A few minutes later a pass, Schwartz to Carideo, took the ball to the 1-yard line and Dan Hanley, latest full back edition, broke into the ma tional scoring limelight. Brill, Gassis and Metzger badly bat tered, Army and Southern Califor- MIA loom mighty dangerous. Purdue Scores Early At Lafayette the customers were about ready to settle back in their seats and watch Purdue hang I’D another of those victories over In diana. Minus the services OF the great Ed Risk, the Boilernakers eSsayed to pass early. A toss, Pope to Moss, closely followed by an other, Pope to Purvis, gave the Purdue squad 6 points. But only that because Van Bibber failed to add the extra point by place kick. In the third quarter Dickey. especially, and Jasper and zeller starred with great defensive work. With Purdue’s running attack functioning like a dud, and Indiana’s pass defensive really clicking, there was nothing to do but cheer the Hoosiers. Dauer dashed between Stears and Van Bibber for twenty five yards which appeared to shatter the Purdue morale. Ross and Saluski added some more yards. Then a driving pass over the center of the line to Dauer over the goal line gave Indiana its touchdown. Hughes Delivers An injured boy, Eddie Hughes, rushed into the fray Eddie long has been famed for his place kicking and sent the oval directly between the uprightS for the Indiana victory The remainder of the game was all I. U. After bowling for three quarters before the play of an inspired Wa bash team, De Paw staged another one of those last quarter offensives that brought two previous victories over Manchester and Boston university and edged out their traditional rivals, Wabash, 7–6. The Scarlet got away to fast start and made a determined drive from their own territory to the De Paw goal with Engle scoring. But the kick for added point went wide. Holding this lead until the fourth quarter it appeared the second big Hoosier upset was on its way. Grain Goes Over With Wheaton on the passing end and Ragsdale on the receiving end the Tigers passed until they reached the seven-yard line A lateral pass worked when the Wabash line stiff fened and Grain went over with the tying touchdown. Wheaton elected to carry the ball around end for the extra and winning point rather than try q. kick or pass. Probably the greatest disappointment to the 5000 fans who went to Butler bowl to see the Haskell In
