N0TRE DAME NOT SURE OF VICTORY Southern California May Be FaYorite in Game Saturday Los Angeles, Dec. (UP)- Skepticisn has overtaken Notre Dame supporters in this section, and the outlook today was that Southern California probably would enter Saturdays game favored to take the Irish. For the first time the pre- game odds were down to even money, with Southern California money very much in predominance, Until the Army pushed Notre Dame to win last week, 7–6. the Irish had been fayorites at 10 to and 10 to in some quarters. Supremcly confident of the strength of Southern California, Trojan packers were not even in clined to smile at Knute Rockne’ s prediction that Notre Dame will lose. Southern California will win,’‘ ! says Rocknc, but by a close score. They won’t win by four touchdoWns as some are predicting Rochne, it Is recalled, made d similar statement on the eve of the Carnegie Tech game, and the Irish went out and won, 21-o. Among others competent to judge and who have switched to Southern California after favoring Notre Dame earlier are Pop Warner. Stan ford coach and Tom Lieb, who coached the Irish while Rockne was sick last season. For those who believe the game might be close it is we’ll to know that out of 5S touchdowns scored this season, Southern California has kicked only 32 extra points or about 55 per cent. Twice in the past two years Notre Dame has won games by the margin Of this single extra point. Frank Carideo, Notre Danes consistent place kicker. has made good 24 out of 29 attempts at goal after touch downs this year, and has kicked the last ten in a row. pF4Ol’ t4’‘ .NOl LII N N’Sl’i IT ‘lliD Army games I thought Notre Dame would win” says Warner. but now I believe those two games have taken too much out of RoCknc’ $ team for 1t to be at top form. Moth ing less than top form can stop Southern California; Lieb, d former Notrc Dame play CT who is now coaching Loyola out here, thinks Southern California will win because the Trojans have the stronger line. Southern Californias line hash { a weak spot in it and will wear down Notre Danes line” says Lieb. Jim Musick should rip the Notre Dame line to pieces as Russell of Northwestern did. Howard Jones cutback play through guard is going to be very hard 10 stop” Notrc Dame and Southern Cali. fornia have played four times in the past four years, with the Irish win ming three games by the margin Of a single point. Strict secret prac- tice has been instituted for the Southern California squad this week.

Notre Dame already has defeated Northwestern and Army, respective midwestern and eastern leaders, and a victory over Southern Cali fornia, rated as one of the two best Pacific coast teams, would eliminate any remaining doubt regarding the schools right to national recogniton. ROckne Not Kidding The Irish, worn and weary after their strenuous schedule of nine games, without a “breather,” and a 2,00O-mile railroad journey, will enter the game as the underdog in the betting-the first time such a condition has prevailed in more than two years. I’m not kidding you or attempt ing to use psychology on the players when 1 say do not expect to win, . Rockne told the United Press today. ‘Notre Dame will be on the down. grade after those two tough battles with Northwestern and Army, and while the boys may rally enough to give the TrojanS a fairly good game [ see no chance of victory” Perfect Play Scores Southern California, coached by Howard Jones, will be in much bet ter condition for the game than Notre Dame. The Trojans have had few hard games this season and since their early season 7 to 6 up set by Washington State, have won their contests by overwhelming scores. Saturdays 7 to s victory over the Army, although gained ny the I’M comfortably close margin of a kick after touchdown, removed any doubt regarding the teams championship calibre. The Irish outgained the heavier Cadets almost ten yards to one and after the mud, ice, rain, fog and sleet nullified many scoring oppo-tunitieS made their TOUCHDOWN on the one perfect play” for which Notre Dame teams strive.
