OLD LINERS FIGURE IN GRID HEADL|NER Game With Yale Is Feature in EaSt-Hoyas Have Big Tilt in Midwest. N 7 EW YORK, September 3d. With only one foot ball Sat- urday behind them, a half dozen Eastern teams will swing into action this week against foes from other sections in battles of more or less Importance. Heading this list will be Yale’s duel with Maryland, which may yield an other thrill similar to the 1913 tie these two teams played last year Maryland showed greater power last week in crushing Washington College, 60–6. Benny Friedman is drilling Yale on forward passes. Georgetown, under Tommy Mills coaching, looked none too strong against Mount st. Mary’s and must improve to turn back Loyola of Chicago in a night game at Chicago Friday night. Davis and Elkins, beaten at Fargo by North Dakota State, battles North Dakota University at Grand Forks the same night, while Duquesne is enter tanning Detroit Tech at Pittsburgh. Armys second start on Saturday will be against Furman, fairly strong Southern outfit, but the Cadets should win handily. Navy opens its season against an intersectional rival, William and Mary, which plays almost exclusively a Southern schedule. Oberlin of Ohio travels East to face Rochester at Rochester and st. Johns of Maryland, classed as an Eastern college, battles Virginia Military to complete the days intersectional card, so far as the At lantic Seaboard is concerned. Most of the other games are practice affairs, the outstanding exception being Pitts annual clash with West Virginia’s Mountaineers at Morgantown. Harvard’s opening opponent, Yer mont, was soundly trounced by Amherst and may fail to give the Crimson even a moderate workout. Besides Vermont, Harvard is taking on Coast Guard Academy in double-header. Amherst, with a strong small college eleven, hopes to give Princeton fight, Just as it did year ago, when the Tigers barely eked out TO decision. Penn, slow in reaching form, still should roll up heavy score on Swarthmore in its first start, and Baltimore hardly will provide trouble for Dick Harlow’s Western Maryland warriors, who will be making their seasons debut.

YALE WILL MEET MARYLAND ELEVEN Few Eastern Grid Teams to Battle Worthy Foes This Week New York, Sept. 29 PIAlthough the next football charge will find most of the casts major college foot ball teams again facing soft op- position, scattered few will battle foes able to meet them on something approaching even terms. The spotlight will center at New Haven, Conn.,, and Morgantown, w. Va., on Saturday. At New Haven, Nal Stevens Yale Bulldogs face Maryland which held the Ellis to a 1913 tie last season. Yale opened against Maine on Saturday and won. 3S-O, while Maryland was trounc- ing Washington college, 60–6. At Morgantown. two old rivals will clash, Pitt and West Virginia, with the odds favoring the Partners once more. West Virginia already has beaten Duquesne and West Virginia Wesleyan but showed no such SCOT ing punch at Pitt did in overwhelm- ing Waynesburg, 53–0. Four of the casts big teams, Har- ward, Princeton Penn and Navy. make their initial starts this week, and only Princeton expects any trouble. The Tigers won by 70 from Amherst year ago and may not do any better on Saturday. Har- yard opens with Vermont; Penn with Swarthmore and Navy with William and Mary. Army’s new backfeld stars, Letz- elter. Herb and Fields, will have a chance to romp through an inter sectional rival, Furman. Other lead ing colleges have only practice games. In this category are such games as Cornell Niagara, Columbia. Union, Dartmouth Bates, Syracuse Hobart, Colgate Bethany, New York University, West Virginia Wesleyan, Brown Worcester Poly, Carnegie Tech-Thiel, Fordham Buffalo, Holy Cross Providence, Lafayette -Muhl- I’enberg, Lehigh-Penn Military, Penn StateLebanon Valley and Washing ton and Jefferson-W n-Westminster. Villanova may have trouble with ‘CLlyoDul5 dllu kot. IHOlIldS DtdIeIl by a single touchdown by Lafayette, may be no pushover for Temple. Western Maryland, one of the casts leading terms fast year, opens the 1880 season against Baltimore Bucknell looks much too powerful for Albright. Wesleyan, beaten by Colby, may find the Connecticut Aggies a hand full but Williams should win easily from Middlebury. There are three outstanding games Friday night, involving eastern col leges. Georgetown, barely winner over Mt. St. Mary’s, travels to\Chi- cago to face Loyola of Chicago, and Davis and Elkins. beaten by North Dakota State, will try again against North Dakota university at Grand Forks. N. D.
