BROMBERG’S TIMELY PLAY STEMS HARVARD ASSAULT New Britain Youth Playing Guard for Dartmouth Blocks Putnam’s Attempted Field Goal and Turns Tide of Battle – Later Blocks Potter’s Punt and Scores Touchdown-Is Hailed as Greatest Lineman By Coaches and Players Gabriel Brombcrg. New Britain youth, is credited with saving the day for Dortmouth in it’s vital game against Harvard Saturday and with turning what might have been a 10–7 Harvard lead into an eventual 34–7 victory for the Big Green foot ball team. Bromberg, who received honorable mention in the selection of All-Amcrican teams last year, is this season eclipsing even his past work and is rated a star in what is considered one of the strongest lines in the country. His per formance Saturday was high mark in q great year, and football writers and experts at the game ran out of superlatives in describing the work of the local youth. It was Bromberg who came | through at what proved the turning point of the game--a critical situa- | ton that came about in the follow | ing manner. Al Marsters, the great Dartmouth back, had slithered his l way through Harvard and allowed i the Green to score early in the open ing period, but Ben Ticknor, Harv- | ard center. had caught low drop | kick and started a Harvard march which brought about a tie score in l the second quarter. In the third session, Putnam had run a short kick back 25 yards to Dartm outh’ 5 | 16-yard line an1 four plays had given the Crimson a first down or the 16-yard stripe. Prevents Field Goal It looked as if Harvard would take the lead, but a tackle play was snearcd, lateral pass broken up and q forward pass knocked down It WAS now last down. and Putnam a clever dropkicller elected to try ( field goal from the 22-yard line With the outcome of the game hang. ing in the balance, he took the pass from center. dropped the ball anC kicked. But as he did so Brombers line. flung up his arms, and defect ed the ball, which ricochetted ava! from the goal posts and landed il the hands of capable Al Marsters Marsters trotted it out ten years an( the Hanoverians, realizing that the, lashed at Harvard with redoubleC vigor and proceeded to hammer ou four more touchdowns. But Bromberg was not through Given the ball through his play Dartmouth took the lead just befor the pericd ended, and as the las quarter opened Harvard had tn ball on it’s own 3S-yard line, thirt down, and was forced to punt. Pot ter started his kick in good sea son, but again Bromberg charged through the Harvard forwards blocked the ball in it’s flight. recov cred it as it bounced crazily along t the 25-yard line. and raced the re mainng distance to the goal line fo Dartm outh’s third touchdown. Praised By Critics These were the two plays i WHICH lne lOCGi playeF SlOOu Ou most prominently, but his work al through the game was of a wonder ful nature, Here is what Bill Gun ningham. former All-Americ choice when he played with Dart mouth, says of his work: Ga Bromberg, the big left guard. wa roaring and clashing all over th place. On offense or defense tn Green forward wall literally lite the Harvard line backward out C it’s tracks and spilled through in a impressive parade” And Myles Lane, Dartmouth halt back in 1925-27 and the recipient ( place on at least the All Easter teams of that year if not the Al America, has this to say of tn play in which Bromberg turned tn tide of battle: Here was the crl , cial moment Putnam fell back , dropkick. His running and passin attack had failed. This was til l play that might make or break tn , Big Green eleven. As the ball le ) his foot, Bromberg defected 1 Harvard had failed to capitalize l great opening and all of Oar 3 mouths latest energy burst int llame.”

YALE, DARTMOUTH . EACH HAS WIZARD Booth and Marsters Will Be Rivals in What Promises to Be Tight Battle. A MONG the outstanding foot ball ~ games tomorrow in the East are IA Yale-Dartmouth and Pennsyl- 4 a vania-Navy, and the intersectional battles, Princeton-Chicago, Harvard–Florida, and Army–Soutn Dakota. The Yale-Dartmouth game will be close. Both teams are strong, and 1t will be q battle from start to finish. Booth of Yale and Marsters, Dartmouth, are two of the best backs in the country, and exceptionally hard to stop. If Yale doesn’t have q let-down after her hard game with the Army, I favor Yale. But Dartmouth showed great power in out playing Harvard, 34–7. The Pennsylvania-Navy game will be another close one, and it Is hard to pick the winner. Pennsylvania, though defeated, put up good game against the strong California team, but had to resort to a drop-kick to beat Lehigh last Saturday. Lehigh, however. has its best team In years. Penn has good backs in Gentle and Masters. The Navy line should be stronger than Penn’s, and Navy has rugged team. Spring In the backfield Is good. Pennsylvania will fight hard to retaliate for last year when the Navy won, Go. Princeton Is Favored. OF the intersectional games perhaps the most interesting is Princeton Chi cago. These teams played for the first time in 1921, in Princeton, when Chi cago won. The return game was at Chicago the following year, and at the end OF one OF the most spectacular foot ball battles ever waged Princeton was ahead, 21–18. This year Chicago is at Princeton. After her singing defeat last week Dy Purdue, Chicago probably will come against Princeton. But if the Prince ton players show the same fighting spirit as against Navy, pick them to win. Florida meets Harvard at Cambridge, and undoubtedly will play a good. close game: But Florida, after having deteated Georgia, 1876. may have Slight let-down, and the long trip North IS hard. On the other hand, Harvard. after Its defeat by Dartmouth. will try strong comeback and should play q good game. The Harvard team I’M doubtedly has power, particularly In the line. pick Harvard to win. Army Should Recover. The Army plays South Dakota at West Point, and should have been able to recuperate sufficiently from the Yale game to win. A rugged team like the Army, with such backs as eagle and Murrel, will not lose two weeks in sue ceSSion. Cornell meets Columbia at Ithaca. and 1t should be great fight. Column. bia has an outstanding back In Hewitt, who may make trouble for the Ithacans. However, pick Cornell. Syracuse and Penn State will be an other close game. Each is good. SYRIA cuse should win. . New York University meets George town at New York. Last year George town won, To, but look for the reverse tomorrow, though the game win be close. Pittsburgh plays Ohio State, and should come out victor. Ohio State showed let-down last week in its tie with Indiana, but Pitt looks stronger any way. Brown should beat Holy Cross. Last year Brown won, 60, and tomorrow It should be close again. The Lafayette Washington and Jeffer. son game will be a good one, and close. pick Lafayette. Georgia Tech won from Notre Dame, 1870, last year, but I doubt If it can do this tomorrow. Rockne’s team Is especially good, and think Notre Dame will win.
