Notre Dame Registers Early To Defeat Penn State, 9 to O line to Notre Danes 45-yard mark. After an intervening play French broke through left tackle and carried the ball to the 10-yard chalkline before he was downed. States advance was the work Of an individual and not sustained attack and with this golden opportunity before them to even the score the ball was lost on downs. Thereafter State never proved a scoring threat. Very few forward passes were COM pleted by either team. Hugo Beziek S boys from State College had many we’ll planned formations, but we’re unable to execute them for substantial gains. State several times lost considerable ground by having their paSser tackled before he could get rid of the ball. The game was played under murky sky after a day of rain and although the field had been covered with rub berized canvas the ground was treacherous Runners frequently slipped betore they were tackled and the ball was often fumbled. Probably under coach ing instructions for this reason the men playing back to receive kicks chose to let the ball be grounded rather than at tempt to catch it and run the chance of fumbling approximately $4,000 person watched the game. The fray was marked by frequent penalties for off, side and with much time out. An off-side of States In the first quarter gave Notre Dame first down close to the goal line that materially assisted the Rockne boys toward their touchdown.

ROckne May Have Surprise for Cadets in Saturday FraCaS. BIG WEEKEND PROMISED Other Indicated Teams in Grid Action. AANSS bRVAhS NEW YORK, Nov. 5.--Out of the Indiana gridland comes a whisper that Knute Rockne has a surprise up his sleeve for the Army when the Irish of Notre Dame cone east for the big intersectional battle of the week, which already has sold out every seat and available inch of standing room in capacious Yankee stadium. The Irish, after scoring early against Penn State, whom they defeated 9 to 0 Saturday, went into a shell and kept the extent of their capabilities to themselves. The Army, one Of the few I’M beaten teams of the year which still retains pretenSionS toward national honors, used substitutes to keep the slate clean with 38-to-12 VIC tory over De Paw. One of the big unbeaten elevens of the east is due for a reverse next Saturday, when Georgetown and Carnegie Tech meet at Albany. The Blue and Gray, having disposed of New York university, Z to 2, Saturday, may meet tartar in the Tech team, which enjoyed a day Of rest. Down in Atlanta, two more unbeaten, united teams of the year are TO meet Georgia Tech opposing Vanderbilt. The two undefeated, united contenders for big Ten” honors. Iowa and Ohio State, meet at Columbus. Altogether. it promises to be quite a Saturday for football.
