TROJAN ELEVEN SEES REAL FOE IN SANTA CLARA LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30-Foot ball, undisputed king of the fall sports, will swing into its second stanza this weekend, with the I’m iversity of Southern California graphing a possible Tartar in Santa Clara in the coliseum here tomorrow and other southland squads mixing at home and abroad. With his squad in good condition, but still far from pleasing football ically speaking, Coach Howard Jones makes no bones about the fact that he will be tickled if his warriors emerge from Saturdays tilt with the scalp of the collegians safely annexed. The Santa Clarans came within an inch of knocking over California in the opening battle for both schools last week, losing after a desperate Bruin rally netted touch downs for IA to 6 win. Then against Occidental the Trojans dis played ragged power, lacking CO. hesion in the pinches despite the 33 to 0 result in their favor. Jones refused to underestimate the Santa Clara strength and has been drilling all week to overcome Trojan faults. Jones will probably start Captain Morley Drury, Lloyd Thomas, How ard Elliott and Edelson in the Trojan back field, with the line per sonnel still uncertain. Adam Walsh. Santa Clara mentor will de. pend upon the ball-carrving combinalton of Barsi, Cummings, Simoni and Terrcmerc, with backfield and line substitutions his big worry as the Bronco squad lacks a long sub stitute list. Two southern con-:renc- games will knock the lid off the annual championship race with California Institute of Technology favorite over Redlands in the Rose Bowl Pasadena, and Whittier and La Verne ‘anybody’s guess’ at the poet = stronghold. Last year unexpected scoreless tie still irritates | the memories of the Whittier ath- ; letes and the battle is taking on the semblance of a “rcvenge’ encounter as far as the poet fold is concerned. Whittier has an early season victory, a 40 to affair | gathered at the expense of navy team, to rate slight favorite, | Captain coax Pendlcton and 4 | fast-stepping youth named Payne who transferred from Pomona Jun Tor College and cavorts at fullback, are expected to feature the Poet $ offensive. ! Minus the services of George Fusco, fullback, Glenn Rozellc runter and runner, and Cuthbert tackle, all injured, Occidental will ! journey to Tucson to meet Arizona in non-confcrcce struggle, while | L. G. l.. A. engages the Fresno State Teachers, also foreign tc Southern California at Moore Field here. San Diego is doped to win , from Christian College on the for mer’s field.
