UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, 6; University of Maryland, 6. Behind these figures lies the “ story Of one of the most des- perately fought foot ball games, and in some respects the most brilliant, ever staged between two elevens in the South. A brilliant Ga yard run by Stevens for touchdown on the first play after his team got possession of the ball produced a six point Lead for Maryland, which it held for three quarters, but about the mid die Of the fourth quarter Kessler failed to get far enough back to punt from his own 30-yard line. Luke broke through and blocked the ball, which rolled to the SiX-inch line, and then fell on it. Hushion pushed through for a touchdown and a tie score, because, like Stevens, Mackall had his try for point blocked. Maryland Defense Strong. While Maryland held the lead and Virginia did not score except by virtue OF a blocked kick. the Old Line eleven several times had it’s back to the wall, but finally halted vicious drives. Maryland’s 6.point lead was in jeopardy in the second period as the result of a long forward pass of which Friedburg. brilliant Virginia end, made a remarkable catch. Here the Mary | !anderS frightened up and Virginia S drives at the line and passes came to naught and the ball changed hands. ! That did not end the situation though, because Kessler got off a poor punt and Virginia again had the ball | on the 25-yard line. Two tries at the ends failed and two forward passes | shortly after that. ! At the beginning of the second half ! Kick Is Blocked. / For the remainder of the third quarter and early in the fourth Mary land was able to check the Virginia attack, but gained little ground itself. and apparently the contest had turned into more or less of a punting duel.
