Tennessee Pulls Surprise To Beat Kentucky, 18-O LEXINGTON, Ky, Nov. 29.-Tak- ing advantage of the breaks of the game and the misplays of the Uni Verstty of Kentucky team the Uni versity of Tennessee Volunteers furnished the biggest surprise of the southern football season here this afternoon by defeating the Wild dotted with pools of water and slip pery from an eight-hour downpour. The Tennessee eleven scored all of it’s points in the last period. \ The Wildcats outplayed the Volun- teers by wide margin in the first three periods, but aided by Kentucky fumbles and a game stand on their own three -yeard line in the third period in which they held the hard downs. Tennessee went into the fourth period on even terms with their opponents. After an exchange of punts early in the final period, Kirwan of Ken lucky tackled on his own 22-yard line, fumbled, and Hardness, Tennes- see quarterback, scooped up the loose ball and sprinted across the Ken lucky goal line for a touchdown. rennessee’s attempt to make the ex- tra point failed. On the second play after the touchdown, the Volunteers made an other marker. Hatcher kicked off and the Wildcats allowed the ball to roll to their own 1-yard line where 1t was put into play. Sauer’s attempted punt was blocked by a Tennessee fullback, fell on the ball behind Ken tucky’s goal line. Again the at tempt to add the extra point failed. Tennessee’s third touchdown came in the last few minutes of play. A desperate Wildcat attempt to for ward pass was intercepted by Holt, Volunteer end, op Kentuckys 24- yard line and on the next play, Bore, halfback, took the ball on a criss- cross, raced down the side line and across the Blue and Gold goal line. For the third time the attempt to add the point failed and during the rest of the game the Wildcats had the ball in Tennessee territory. The Volunteers, playing good defensive football behind their big lead, kept the Cats away from the Gold and white goal line. The gcme ended with the ball in the Wildcats possession on Tennes- White goal line. On statistics alone the Wildcats would have won by a wide margin. They made ten first downs to Tel.- times as many yards by line plays and end runs as their opponents. Holt, Tennessee’s captain, playing his last game In a Gold and White uniform, was the outstanding star of the game. He not only recovered three Kentucky fumb1es, but repeat edly broke up the Wildcats end runs and off tackle plays before they were well started, several times snagging the runner for a loss. Bone played the best game of the Volun- teer backfield, while Captain Ram sey of the Wildcats, also playing his last collegiate game, and Sanders Kentucky fullback, stood out above the other wearers of the Blue and White.
