RECORDS REMAIN UNBROkEN IN EAST No Shape-Up In Dope, Which Bring Unusual Changes For Season merry crackle of the collar-bone and the sodden thump of aspirations, flopped hard upon the eastern lea in two score weekend football games, there arose no sound as of seasons records being fractured. There is no noise in sport quite like the chatter of smashed record, and when one goes down to demolition under pres sure, the echoes roll over the land like waves of a great scandal Three teams went into saturday football games with big records Cor nell, Yale and Syracuse all were un- beaten up to the time of kicking off, and the commotion would have been unusually noisy if any of those three had been beaten. All were playing against schools below their own re- spective football ratings and the three of them protruded above the jumbled mass of struggling teams this side of the Alleghenies as claimants for the nebulous title of eastern champion. Titles seldom mean any more in football than they do in the middle weight division of wrestling, because l the claimants very seldom are per mitted to come together for settle ment in the old-fashioned and only conclusive way However, Cornell mauled Columbia in New York, 35 to 0; Yale belatedly reused to mild fury and nosed out Maryland 16 to IA; and Syracuse, which might have been occupied with more strenuous business at this late date of the schedule, pushed Boston university backward. even Backward until the Boston goal had been crossed many times and the final score stood 49 to 0. l Q Staging COmebacks. Anywhere else, readjustment was progressing. HoosegoW, which had been defeated by Siwash, reared up and tromped all over Jazzbo Tech, which had annihilated Siwash but week before By this time almost | every college, even humblest of Joe McCann schools, which always spend the first few weeks of the season bending a sacrificial neck for the cleat-marks of the big universities, has found somebody that the hum- blest Joe McCann can whip. Little Albright, alone. of the cas- tern group of padded and helmeted armies, seems to have been unable to win a single game, but perhaps Albright has saved an annual easy mark for the last game of the season, bright, varsity, ’23, may dandle his grandson on his knee-cap and tell him about that famous victory. The schedules of Cornell and Syra- cuse suggest a little timidity here and there, but Yale also has enter tained some visitors who apparently were chosen with an alert eye to their vulnerability. Cornell has two moderately good teams yet to meet. in Johns Hopkins, which gave Princeton a good tussle early in the season, and Penn, which won from Centre and Pittsburg and beat Swarthmore by slight margin. Syracuse vs. Colgate. Syracuse is dated with Colgate next Saturday and after that with the Nebraska team. which on Saturday conquered Notre Dame for the second time in succession. If Syracuse should beat Nebraska, as Syracuse has done in the past, then on the silly basis of comparisons, Syracuse would rank above Princeton, the Army and Notre Dame without hay ing met any one of them. The readjustment of scores shows that the teams of the east are more evenly matched this year than they have been for several previous sea- sons. It may, also show that the quality of football in this part of the country has subsided, but that is for the professional coaches and old players of highly technical mind to determine. Harvard, beaten by Dartmouth and tied by little Middlebury, ascended one of those spiritual hummocks which football teams are always scaling, and won from Princeton. which was looked upon as 8 to 1 shot, as one compares values at the races. Lafayette, beaten by the dejected Partners of Pittsburg and tied twice, was able to beat Pennsylvania. The same Maryland that gave Yale an hour of worry was the team that won from Penn early in the year and the close fight in each case will foment into tasty silage for the Maryland boys to feed on during the long winter evenings. Almost every team in the east has been beaten. Perhaps it’s not right to dwell so on the matter of defeats, but every defeat is also, a victory for the other team. A better way would be- perhaps. to say that every team has won it’s victories. The ratings will be very close when the season ends, and this may indicate only that all are playing good foot ball, each one about as well as the next.
