Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin And Chicago Have Clean Record CHICAGO, Oct. 21.-Four Western conference football teams emerged from Saturdays gridiron contests with their records unscratched, while two other teams which had been regarded as Big Ten champion ship contenders, were practically eliminated. Michigan. Illinois, Wisconsin and Chicago are tied at the end of the second week of conference com petition with one victory each and no defeats. Illinois shattered most of Iowa’s hopes of championship honors yesterday, while Michigans Buckeyes with chances for first honors 1essened. While Michigan and Illinois have demonstrated the most strength to date. Wisconsin has developed by leaps and bounds since opening it’s strated it’s strength yesterday by smothering Indiana 52–0 in its first conference contest. Chicago. which also engaged in it’s first Big Ten game, fought a hard battle to de- feat Northwestern 13 to 0, but Coach Stagg this year is developing his team slowly and apparently hopes that the maximum of strength will be reached later in the season. Chicago yesterday scored their first touchdown after only five minutes of playing, and the second after advancing for so yards through the Purple line In the meantime, however, the Maroons had several narrow qreaks, managing at one time to kick out of danger from their one-foot line, while at another Captain McElwain of the Purple got away to a 40-yard end run that the Maroons stopped with difficulty. O O O Illinois Wins Sensational Victory. Illinois 9 to 6 victory over Iowa was probably the most sensational conference contest of the day. The Illini, which have shown their strength on offensive play in nom conference contests, exhibited mysterious defense against Iowa when the game seemed slipping from their grasp and the Hawkeyes were tasting what seemed almost certain victory. Illinois made three points through Britton’s almost phenomenal field goal, but the Indians were chased all over the field by the prancing Hawkeyes and when Iowa scored early in the fourth period. glimmering. 1t was then that the Illini fought. An aerial attack was started with a rain of passes that took the ball down the field to the Hawkeye two-yard line. where Grange, the great find of Zuppke, spanned the six feet necessary to give Illinois victory. Michigan played true to dope in winning from Ohio State 23 to 0 by launching an aerial attack that dazed the Buckeyes and left them almost helpless at times.- The Wolverines varied this with bril- liant game of straight football in the second period that also had the Ohio team guessing. The brunt of the Ohio offense fell to big Hoge Workman, but he was not given the best of support. Wisconsin’s 52 to 0 victory over Indiana was a surprise even to Wis consin fans and showed a great de- of the Badgers in the last week.
