SMALLER ELEVENS Of SOUTH WORRY THEIR BIGGER FOES Saturdays football results proved less surprising than on the week before, but again gave evidence that southern college teams are becOming closer matched. It seems no longer to be a case of a Big Three Or Big -Four. The smaller colleges are becoming more powerful. Georgia Tech, dominant for so many years, had her hands full with the Cadets from the Virginia Mill tary institute and the most ardent supporters of the Atlantians admit ted their team was lucky to win. The score was 10 to Z. Techs touchdown was made by Wycoff who intercepted forward pass and ran IS yards. The other scoring was due to a dropbick by II. Reeves, after Hunt had intercepted a Cadet pass and run so yards. V. M. rs score was due to Faulkner’s fine run with a fumbled ball. V. M. I. outgained Tech and it is likely would have won but for errors of judgment and little hard luck. A feature of the game was the punt ing duel between White of V. M. l., and Wycoff. The former had the better of it, and his kicks were SUI perbly covered by as fine a pair Of ends in Carlton and Watkins as has been seen on Grant field in many day. Barbour, the big tackle, also played splendidly for the Ca diets, while Wycoff, Station, Frye and Bob Reeves starred for Tech. Oglethorpe, which gave Tech such a scare a week before, fought game ly at Athens but was handily beaten by the University of Georgia. Score, 90 to 6. Fletcher, the great half back from Triton, was Georgia’s star, with Captain Bennett, Joe Tay- Tor and Randall playing finely. David, whose fine bucking scored theis. only points, was Oglethorpe’s bri~ntest light. With Virginia’s scalp hanging at their belt, Furman’s fine eleven came to Macon only to be beaten, 6 to 3, by Mercer, whom Georgia had great difficulty in defeating the previous Saturday. The game was very close and in doubt to the very last. Both teams fought with great courage. OF the other South Carolina teams, Clemson defeated Newberry handily. score 80 to 0. Citadel won from Erskine, &c to 0, and Presbyterrain college won from the state university, to 3. University of North Carolina was overwhelmed by Yale, 53 to 0; State college surprised the fans by hold ing Penn State to Is to 0 score; Trinity smashed Randolph-Maco 81 to o; Wake Forrest walloped Guilford, Al to 0; Davidson lost to V. P. L., to O, and Elon won from Lynchburg, to O.. Florida put up strong game against the West Point Cadets and there was no scoring in the first half; the big army team, however. wore the southerners down. in the second half and won 20 to O.. Army is regarded as the strongest team in the east and Florida’s showing was very fine. Auburn had trouble with Birmingham-Southern but. won 20 to 0; Ala bama beat Mississippi, SIS to 0. and Spring Hill won from the Camp Benning soldiers, IS too. Vanderbilt defeated Howard, q to 0; Tennessee tied Maryville, IA to IA; Sewannee ran over southwestern Presbyterian, “a to 0; Centre beat Carson Newman, IS to 0; Virginia
